Are these actually Victorinox-made or Victorinox-branded? I have had vastly different experiences depending on their origin.

I was just looking through the photos curious to see which knives come with each set, and I realized that there are three knives pictured that aren't included in either set (and therefor aren't available in this drop at all):
Image 5: a low profile chef's/slicing knife Image 6: a boning or filleting knife of some sort Image 8: a fluted blade santoku knife
Mistakes like this seem to be happening a lot lately...

What is High-carbon stainless steel? and where can I buy stock in the company that supplies it?

TohveliusIn marketing speak, it's any stain resistant steel that contains a higher percentage of carbon than common stainless steel grades like 304, etc.
And in answer to your second question, perhaps try Madison Avenue?

TohveliusMost likely X50CrMoV15. Victorinox uses it on at least some of their kitchen knives... these aren't labeled, so it's hard to say, for sure. If that's what these are made of, it's nice stuff. It's a pity the utility knife's serrated; pain in the arse to sharpen. X50CrMoV15 is the same stuff WÜSTHOF uses. It feels like it's somewhere in between proper stainless, and proper high carbon steels. It rusts, but not quickly, and it turns a darker grey over time. Sharpens up like a razor, and holds a tolerable edge. It doesn't look like a terrible set, for the money, if you're after an all-in-one set.

I purchased these same exact knives when I first got married and they are OUTSTANDING! They are workhorses and keep an edge really well. They're now 21 years old and I expect to have them for the rest of my life. Highly recommended!!!

hulsephotoSounds good, but are they still made with the same quality as 20 years ago? I wonder.

readehxNot knowing, but I'd be betting that factories have changed. Can be a major difference. Glad to hear that they've at least been quite reliable. Anyone have any other more recent thoughts?
