It's called a "Traveling Inkwell" because it is meant to be used to refill your fountain pen when you run out of ink while TRAVELING. If you don't use a fountain pen much, or if you don't run out of ink while away from home/office, then this is not needed at all.
If the conditions fit you, it is a really nice device. It works as advertised. It is compact and sturdy. No question: It costs a lot and is probably over-priced for what it is.
I have two of them. I carry them, along with one eye dropper, in a Nock Lookout (Oh, dear. There's another $20!) while traveling. I use them very seldom, since I usually travel with <blush><ahem!> a large number of pens.
Half-ounce Nalgene bottles are way less expensive. They are bulkier and messier. They don't leak, but I've found ink does get on the threads of the bottle. Small vials like those used for ink samples are good for one fill, but you need a method to prevent spilling. Small (15ml) glass or plastic ink bottles are another alternative. I see them as pretty comparable to the Nalgene bottles for advantages and disadvantages.
My bottom line: I do believe the Visconti Traveling Inkwell is the most elegant solution to taking ink on a trip. It is expensive and, IMO, over-priced. But, if you have the money and want "the best solution" to a problem that is real for you, go for it. I only know one source that offers it at a better price than MD.
