I might be more interested in this thing if I could see some shots of the internals. The specs on paper look good, as does the coaxial output ability, but it all seems a moot point if we're basically buying completely blind. I've tried searching around a bit but I can't seem to find anything for either this, the accompanying amp, or the slightly larger VMV desktop amp. It might not be possible due to the nature of the case, but I'm curious what the insides look like. It might just be a killer little travel DAC for 100 bucks...
Very few people have joined this and the associated amp drop, I think this has been somewhat of a misstep.
If you want to push a DAC and amp combo selling at the exact same price as the Schiit Modi/Magni stack, it better have a bunch of reviews backing it up.
And all we have here is one review... In Polish, and no comparison with any popular alternatives in its price range.
DoctorXI feel ya! That said, a DAC that has the same price point as the Schiit Modi, but with 32 bit and 192 kHz sampling rates seemed like something of interest to the community.
If you're really interested in a review, I could write one up, since I have about 30 ~ 40 hours of listening time on this DAC with a T1 / A1 setup.
AndrewLekashmanThanks for the offer, it wouldn't hurt to do a review of the VMV dac and amp separately and together as a combo; however just a single data-point/reviewer isn't going to be able to create a consensus on the performance/quality as it's very subjective.
Case in point I was part of the HiSoundAudio BA100 drop, which is new on the market and had about 5-6 reviews claiming it sounds good. After I burned it in for a week and tested it out I came away disappointed with its sound quality and doubting how those reviewers were able to claim it sounded good, I was barely able to drive it to adequate volume out of my iPhone 4, and to think it comes with a smartphone remote...
So now I'm very, very hesitant to buy into any audio product sound-unheard unless it is an established product on the market, backed by many good reviews.
This is the higher end brand of SMSL. I have an SMSL headphone amp, and it is great. I might use it with this.
The specs are better than my current HifimeDIY Sabre DAC, but it's all in the implementation.
Reviews are scarce, but here's a decent one in Polish. Google Translate handles it pretty well. Replace "transmitter" with DAC, and it also reviews another device from the company - a desktop headphone amp. So ignore references to VA2 as well. It appears they were pretty impressed! http://blog.pclab.pl/violator/VMV.Audio.VA2.oraz.Magic.bo.da.si%C4%99.tanio.i.dobrze,284
JDWarnerMy favorite line in this review has got to be - "You can see the ubiquitous perfection of the enclosure, its edges are perfectly equal, everything is fine and dandy"
