Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. The vibe's original keys now sit happily on my pok3r with browns, feels waaay better on that.
My main issue with the VIBE and the Pok3R (apart from the fact that I am not keen on Cherry mx or mx clone switches) is their particular programmability. I like to use the Right Ctrl as my Fn key, and apparently with these boards, you cannot remap the Right Ctrl using the keyboard's built-in remapping functions. It is, however, possible to remap the Right Ctrl using other means, such as the Hasu USB-USB converter or remapping software, such as Karabiner for Mac or ATNsoft Key Manager for Windows.
Despite these preference issues, the VIBE is certainly a handsome board, which makes the purchase difficult to resist.
unfortunately you're still correct. While LCTRL was FN-able, RCTRL was not. Might be hard coded to avoid screwing up the programming combo.
Vortex no doubt has a lot invested in their method of programming keyboards, but I still wish they would convert to something akin to TMK or QMK for total programmability of every key, including R_Ctrl.
That said. I'm waiting patiently for my susuwatari MT3 set. In the meantime though I'm thinking of grabbing SA Ice Cap icon mods and numpad and jumping on troubled minds alphas.
Even with the green text on alphas, the purple/white clash would look great.
I'm also praying that SA Pulse gets another drop.
Will post Vibe with new caps once they are all here
