Just starting out in the audiophile community, purchased the K7XX drop. Have the E09K and E17 on the way to help power the device but also want a good set of portables. I'm thinking the W40 would be overkill and the W20 or even 10 would suffice. Thoughts?
Also I've thought about switching out to the Schiit Vali/Modi combo, but then I lose the portable amp w/ the E17 and would potentially have to purchase one as I don't think my M8 is up to the task, thoughts?
Thanks for the feedback, can't wait to join you guys in sound heaven.

SativaDroThat's pretty difficult to answer actually, as a lot depends on the sort of sound signature that you like. If you could, the best way is to go down to an audio shop to audition them. You'll be able to understand and compare the differences. If a 'lower' model is good enough then by all means, get it and save some dollars for upgrading your DAP or amp. =D

SativaDroI have the Vali/Modi combo with my Beyerdynamics DT-880. They are a fantastic first step that will really help open your eyes to what you've been missing.
Which direction you go, whether it be with a focus on portable or home use, depends on you and your lifestyle. Personally, I like having a dedicated home setup where I can sit down and focus on the music. No distractions, no outside world. I just pour a bottle of beer and disappear.
I don't have any sort of mobile setup, so I can't really say which one I think is better. I just know I am super happy with the direction I went first.

SativaDroI recommend doing a LOT more research before dropping this kind of money. I like to read joker and ClieOS on head-fi and theheadphonelist.com. Check out innerfidelity.com as well (some overlapping material).
