I am just starting to use mine. Put the rods on for 15 and noticed the one rod is actually 2-3mm further away from the clamp and blade than the other. Is this normal. Angle gauge I bought shows different angles...what am I doing wrong?

PneumothoraxNever mind. Finally found YouTube video that explained it. I'm good.

My Wicked Edge came 2 days ago. I have been breaking in the stone and learning the technique on knives that I don't care about. I was definitely not satisfied with the first knife I sharpened and was concerned that I had wasted money, but now on the 4th knife I am starting to see satisfactory results. I think light pressure is the key, I had a tendency to push down too hard.

I really wanted the extra stones of the Pro version, but the blade width limit of under .5cm left me hesitant to make the decision. In the end, I decided not to buy one of these today. If I'm going to pay close to $700 in Australian dollars, I don't want to be wondering whether I made the right choice.

Is this mass drop deal gen 2 or 3? I have 90% Spyderco ffg blades and am concerned about the gen 3 comments.

PneumothoraxThe "Pro" model uses the Gen 3 clamp that is self-centering.
FFG blades aren't impossible with either one but they are easier with the Gen 2 style clamp that the F&S model has.
Clay Allison, they guy who made this sharpener has a suggestion of using foam tape to fill the gap left by the FFG. See his video on the subject here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17rDq-yiMIU

Massdrop, can we get you to add the Wicked Edge Pro Pack II to the drop? Or some option with the Gen2 sharpener and the heavy base rather than this portable C-clamped version?

motocoderThanks for asking, but this drop is limited to Field & Sport Models only. I'm glad to ask if we could setup a drop for the Pro-Pack series in the future, great suggestion.

motocoderI have the Wicked Edge Pro Pack II with the upgraded arms and absolutely love it! It almost makes it fun to sharpen them! I love the ease and functionality of the product. People bag on them, but they rock!

I wanted to chime in on this one. I'm pretty into knives and I own a Wicked Edge myself. I can't answer Zhao's question because the one for sale here has a different base than what mine has. Mine came with the base as part of the package. It also came with 3 sets of balsa strops for polishing. Those aren't necessary to get a super crazy sharp edge. they just make it look shiny like a mirror.
I did want to let everyone know about my experience so that they will enjoy theirs more. When I first got mine, the diamond stones weren't broken in yet and the first couple knives I sharpened didn't turn out so great. After about 3 or 4 knives, the results are amazing. With that in mind, I recommend that you sharpen some old beaters before you try sharpening your $500 safe queen ;-) I also recommend getting the 1200/1600 ceramic stones. They really finish up the blades nicely. Anything finer than that and you're polishing vs. sharpening (IMHO). https://www.amazon.com/Wicked-Edge-Superfine-Ceramics-1200/dp/B006WRH5SK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1490280303&sr=8-1

That_One_GuyYep, that's the post I was referring to above. I've never seen anyone from WickedEdge acknowledge or refute that.

Really good deal here. 1)Just curious, is this set able to be mounted on those wicked edge marble base? 2) how does the clamp system of gen 3 (pro pack) compares to gen 1 (normal pack)?

Maybe this was just a start. Hoping the pro pack 2 is out soon. Go massdrop!

ZhaoBased on my experience with the "pro" model being sold in this drop, no, there's no way to mount it to the granite base. This comes with a c-clamp to mount it to a workbench, table, etc.
The clamp on the gen 3 does have the ability to mar the finish of a knife... that's not a guarantee. I am attaching a photo of my CRKT Wrinkle that I've sharpened on my Gen 3 several times. (I think 7... possibly 8). I've never used painters tape on the spine like I have with my wife's kitchen knives... I don't know if they would be marred... and to keep her happy I use one layer of painters tape and I've never had a single scratch from the clamp. This knife has some blemishes on the surface near the cutting edge but that's also ok with me because I've had it 4 years and had it on me/used it every day.
There's a bigger difference between the two clamps worth thinking about... the max blade thickness that can be clamped is only 3/16 on the gen 3.... you can change the jaws for the it but thats an upgrade you need to buy... once it's locked in, it's not like you have to change the mount.... so if you are at all concerned... go gen 2.
