UnwisefoolI've owned and worn quite a few pair of the Wigwam Merino/Silk Hikers and always loved them. They've always lasted as long or longer than most other quality wool/merino wool socks I've owned. Some of the most comfortable socks I've ever worn! As for comparing to Darn Tough socks, I haven't owned my Darned Toughs long enough to compare longevity, but the fit and comfort when hiking is about the same. Don't know if that helps any, but there it is. Oh, and these are my wife's FAVORITE socks. She wears them year round. At this price, it's definitely time to get some more as some of hers are starting to get a little thread bare in the heels. But then, she DOES wear a pair of these EVERY day, so...

KitCarson61I wear a 9-9.5 US shoe, so I'm right in between sizes. Since you & wife are familiar with fit, think I should opt for the large?

Pryor0nFireProbably? I wear a 10.5 and my wife wears a 10 (women's, 8.5 men's) and the large size fits me perfectly, but she prefers the medium. That being said, she will sometimes steal mine and wear them with no complaints.

UnwisefoolBoth Darn Tough and Wigwam are great well known sock manufacturers. I own socks from both companies, and they perform excellently. The big difference is the so called lifetime warranty, which they both actually refer to as a guarantee. Darn Tough's guarantee is pretty much unconditional, actually it is unconditional, and Wigwam's guarantee is based upon defects in materials and workmanship. Good Luck proving those defects if your sock fails, or just wears out due to normal wear and tear! Darn Tough does not ask questions, even if the socks are just worn out due to normal wear and tear after many miles, or years! Here's the bottom line language found in Darn Tough's guarantee: Our unconditional lifetime guarantee is simple and without strings or conditions. If our socks are not the most comfortable, durable and best fitting socks you have ever owned, return them for another pair.

https://darntough.com/pages/our-guarantee So, all a Darn Tough sock owner has to do is just simply return their worn out socks to Darn Tough on their dime, and Darn Tough will send you back a free replacement pair of socks with free shipping! Owners of Darn Tough socks literally will never have to purchase another pair of socks! Following is the language found in Wigwam's guarantee: Since 1905, Wigwam Mills has built our industry leading products to exceed consumer expectations for comfort, performance, quality and durability.

Wigwam is proud to provide a Lifetime Guarantee that assures our products will be free of all defects in materials and workmanship. Simply stated, Wigwam will replace any products free of charge that have a defect due to the materials or workmanship.

As a loyal Wigwam consumer would expect, our Lifetime Guarantee does not cover damage caused by normal wear and tear, accident (lost/stolen), improper care or cleaning, non-standard usage or negligence.

In order to qualify for a replacement, your "first quality" item purchase must have been made from an authorized Wigwam Mills dealer and a proof of purchase (receipt, copy of credit card statement) should be included with all returned products.

A copy of the Return Form must also be included with your return.

https://www.wigwam.com/support/lifetime-guarantee/ As you can see by reading the language, Wigwam has a ton of hoops to jump through, and it is doubtful that a Wigwam sock owner will ever be able to obtain a free replacement pair of socks, except in the rarest of cases. However, as I stated at the outset, both companies do manufacture great socks! By the way, there are other sock manufacturers that provide lifetime guarantees/warranties that are similar to Darn Tough's guarantee, such as: Farm to Feet, https://www.farmtofeet.com/pages/guarantee Feetures, https://feetures.com/pages/lifetime-guarantee Fitsok, https://www.fitsok.com/pages/the-fitsok-warranty Icebreaker, https://www.icebreaker.com/en/service-warranty.html Wrightsock, https://www.wrightsock.com/pages/guarantee You may be surprised to learn that some other well known sock manufacturers have very short term, or in some cases no warranties/guarantees covering their products. Bridgedale, Lifetime, but with conditions like Wigwam, https://www.bridgedale.com/guarantee I do have several great pairs of Bridgedale socks that I have owned for more than 15 years with no real signs of wear! Defeet, No warranty/guarantee that I can find! https://defeet.com/pages/exchanges-returns Fox River, 1 year, https://www.foxsox.com/pages/guarantee Smartwool, two years, https://www.smartwool.com/discover/smartwool-guarantee.html Thorlo, 30 Days!! I have not had good luck with the durability of Thorlo hiking socks! https://www.thorlo.com/faq#10 There are other brands out there, but I have referenced all of the most popular, and major brands above. For the price you pay, and the warranty/guarantee you probably can't go wrong with Darn Tough, and if you want to try the different manufacturing technology of some of the other sock manufacturers; I would recommend trying sock manufacturers that offer similar unconditional warranties/guarantees as listed above like Wrightsock, which has some interesting sock technology. Socks are very trivial and simple sounding, but on a long hike the wrong socks can ruin your day! I hope that this helps!
