Whats the purpose of keeping my watch wound if I'm not using it?

aaron.oI have a few automatics which I keep running with a winder for the same purpose as I would take a car out that I don't use regularly. If you allow a machine -- a car, a watch, whatever -- to run down and not get semi-regular use, eventually the fluids and parts will wither and fail. So even if you think by not using the watch/car/etc. that you're preserving the item in question, you're actually doing the item a disservice and will have to do semi-significant improvements/repair to the device once you want to start using it again.

aaron.oWhat the other guy said, but also if you have a perpetual calendar or moonphase, it'd be quite the hassle to reset it every time you wanted to wear the watch.

TigerUKNo citation necessary. If you don't need to keep the watch running perpetually and don't mind re-setting it when you take it out to wear it, you should not see much in the way of trouble. But every high-end watch manufacturer will advise you to keep them running on a winder...it may be they want to keep the watch running so they can ding you for service and fees, but every watch I've had runs better when I leave it running even when it's not being worn regularly. YMMV.

BoogieNYCYou're just making anologies between two entirely different things. A car and watch are entirely different mechanically.
Car needs to be run every so often to stop flat spots on tyres. Water ingress through condensation in brake lines, engine. Damp developing inside etc. Condensation in fuel tank etc.
None of these risks exist for watches. The reverse is true for watches, you can not wear it for 2 years, and then pick it up and wear it without any issues. In fact having a watch in a winder you're not intending to wear in the next few days is putting unnecessary wear on the movement.
