gamingwafflecakeI'm just getting into these types of amplifiers that involve tubes so I don't know of any specific brands. You have to make sure any replacement tube you purchase is a 12AU7 type tube. You can either go vintage or new when getting a tube. I've noticed a lot of drops come with one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Genalex-Gold-Lion-12AU7-Tube/dp/B00D0E8EFQ and other users mention these: http://www.amazon.com/Electro-Harmonix-12AU7-EH-Vacuum-Tube/dp/B000UMDYYW . Just do some research on what kind of sound you're looking to get out of your tube.

CubeI am also a starter with this amp. check here before you buying anything. http://www.head-fi.org/t/392713/12au7-comparison,

, and here http://www.vacuumtubes.com/12au7.html for more info about 12au7
but if you are going to buy those tubes on amazon, you should also buy this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/12AX7-CV4004-NOS-VALVE-TUBE-/260561305364?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3caaa9ff14 or http://www.ebay.com/itm/M8136-CV4003-VINTAGE-USSR-NOS-BOXED-/310355623848?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4842a2ffa8 12AX7 is same pin as 12au7, read here for the difference http://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/home-audio/626807.html
I use Tesla ECC802S those are copy of Telefunken ECC802S because I can't afford the legendary Telefunken ECC802S :)

SlaanderThanks for the links! Just wanted to give some examples of what's out there with the Amazon links. I'm going to burn in the tube that comes with this amp and might try out a vintage tube after the stock tube. There seems to be a plethora of tubes out there and a lot of them are reasonably priced. I'm very interested to see how much the tubes impact the sound, I heard with these hybrid amps it's not as noticeable compared to pure tube amps, but I guess we'll find out!

SlaanderHi there, Which impedance ver. are your DT990 - 250ohm or 600ohm? I've just purchased the xDuoo TA-01 and I'm thinking if I should go straight for the 600ohm DT990 since all specs say the TA-01 should be able to drive them well. What is your experience? Thanks

Timewalker I have the 250 ohm pro version, and my volume is around 5-6 with the tesla tube, but my tube has been burnt in, when new tube I need to use the volume at 6-7. i also has DT770 Pro but I rarely use it because DT990 is much better cans. The tube comes with the amp has gone into the garbage first sec I open the package heh. (made in China), I am new to the tube amp stuff too, all i do is research as well. and I was use audioengine D1 before I got this ta-01. much much difference sound between those 2 amps. sorry my grammar is not that good.

SlaanderGreat thank you! I guess TA-01 will power the 600 ohm ver of DT990 at full power.
Where did you get the tube extender and tube guard? Looks great. What are they, brand model?

SlaanderThank you! I've found them. Which of these three tube guards do you have? 2, 3 or 4 levels? Do you mount them at the top of the black panel of inside?

Timewalkerthe shorter one is for 12au7, yes there is 3 screws hole from the silver plate, which will be direct replacement with the tube guard. and one more close to the front panel, so total 4 screws not 3 to remove the silver plate,

Timewalkeralso if you feels the output too low for t he 600 ohm, you can try to get goldlion 12ax7 (ecc83/b759) ax tube got little higher output power. but as always you gain something you also lose something. since more power output so the music to me is, what to say, kinda like more echo in the ear? dont know how to tell you lol.

SlaanderThanks! I think I'll go for 990 pro 250 ohm too. Easier to power with other amps too. Using 12ax7 / ecc83 tubes with a 12au7 (mid gain) can cause circuits overdrive, so i'll stick to 12au7, ecc82, e82cc, e802s gold. Ive started buying tubes already got JJ e82cc, then ordered Tesla NOS ecc82, then a Sylvania 6189 ecc82 1969made, then maybe will go for a Mullard ''phatty'' sound. Thanks for your help!

Timewalkerfor me if I can get original tesla tube I will get it before JJ reissued because of older days QA is much much more higher than now days, because old days to make a tube is cost effective, factory 2nd means they lose money, and now days making a tube is cheap, factory 2nd, yeah just throw it away.
also ecc82 vs ecc802s is the life 802s said has longer life, not sure true or not. and this is music test I use the most for any new tube I put on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu5cNspIJNA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_I2nS7kMHM tube should open up after 100 hours of using or so
