Would this be recommended for the Hifiman HE-400i's or would the drivers not work well enough. I'm using windows 10/ Would any other dac/amps be better than this? I might get other headphones with more ohms or power needed like the HD6xx or k7xx. Would this work with an Samsung S7?

IlikedifferentthingsI have the TA-01 and HE-400i. They work together fine. The driver on the cd was corrupted though and I had to use the ones that were linked to on Amazon in the Customer questions and answered section under this amp. If you trust the link it is---> https://mega.nz/#F!hCBkVBDA!BgS6cuIjKbD0seDxDGKBNQ . Its the xmos version 3.0. I have had no problem with these drivers in windows 10. I put in the Golden lion 12au7 and I am satisfied enough considering the price. Right now I am listening to Toumast Tinsha by Tinariwen streaming on Tidal and it sounds pretty good. Lots of volume for sure. Edit: I have the hd-600's and I was doing some A/B testing with the He-400i's. The HE-400i's are a lot brighter than the Senns. On a lot of songs I like the warmth of the Senns better. Some sounds(like belting high pitched female voices) just doesn't sound as natural on the Hifimans as they do on the Senns. Also I need to mention the dac/amp, tube, and He0400i are all new(the Senns. are 10 years old) so the sound is slowly changing for the better so maybe that will change over time. If I did not have any headphones to start I would go for the Senns. to use on this amp. Beyerdynamic's DT-990's need equalization on this amp for it to sound good.
RottenRodneyIs the HE-400i broken in yet?

IlikedifferentthingsNo, it has about 20 hours on them. The manual says 150 to break in.

IlikedifferentthingsI am running the Hifimans 24 hours a day now. Friday they will be broken in. I will let you know if you want if they smooth out. So far the Senns are a better match for this amp. More organic, natural sounding. I don't know yet if I will keep the Hifimans. Got 30 days to decide.

RottenRodneyWell, I have enough hours on the Hifimans to make a review with this amp and headphones. The sound isn't going to change much with the hours remaining for break-in. Anyway, I think I now know why the Senns. sound better to me. On both headphones I can tell its a digital source and a solid state amp, the digital harshness that I don't care for is there. The Hifimans are really clear and bright and since they don't have as warm a sound as the Senns. they really highlight the digital sound signature. So the Senns. just do a better job of masking a digital system.

RottenRodneyI should of waited before I commented on the hd-400i. They broke in all the way and are really good. I am listening to them now instead of the senns hd-600. They are so dam clear that they make senns sound muddy. Sorry

RottenRodneyI'm thinking of getting a Beyerdynamic DT-990 250ohm to be used with this amp. I read your comment about the needed equalization. Can you please explain why you think so? Thanks!

TimewalkerSure, age related bass disease. Starts hitting about 25-40 years of age. Symptoms are turning the tone controls to neutral, buying headphones that are neutral, using eq when needed, and a generally changing brain that is anemic to heavy bass frequency sound waves in headphones. In other words, getting old and heavy bass gives me a headache. I have just got my first set of planers, and I like the clear mids without a heavy bass signature. When I was young though, Bring it on !!!

TimewalkerThis is my opinion about headphones which is two speakers clamped to my head. I like tight neutral bass. Now in a home theater, I have subs that have dual 15 inch drivers, 1000 watt amps, frequency responce down to 16 hertz that will bounce sound waves in the chest cavity that can be felt, now that kind of bass I really like.

RottenRodneyThanks! I completely understand what you mean, I'm also after sound neutrality but cannot go after $300+ Hi-Fi models at the moment. I'm trying to decide between a beyerdynamic model now, as I've not had one of these and I believe it's a good entry level value for the money from what I've read.
I listen mostly to electronic music (mainly minimal house, not techno or EDM) where sound structuring is often punchy but controlled not so layered bass also without so much driving sub-bass.
I read everywhere that the DT880Edition is more neutral to DT990PRO both 250 ohms. Both nearly the same price.
Having in mind that this amp is a TUBE amp and things can go very warm and fat, should I get the neutral version and experience the amp in its clearer form. Maybe Tube amp + "funny" DT990PRO would be a much "bassy" combination?
Also when tube rolling I guess neutral headphones must be the right choice? hence DT880Edition?

TimewalkerIf you want to take a path of exploration and measurements: https://audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?articles/ https://www.innerfidelity.com/headphone-measurements I have since moved on to a RME-ADI-2 Dac/amp. The TA-01 will become a portable rig since its 12 volt for the car/motel.

RottenRodney "Maybe Tube amp + "funny" DT990PRO would be a much "bassy" combination? " I had the premium not the pro from about 10 years ago. I recently gave it to a friends kid who is in band class for his keyboard and the xduoo amp loaned out also right now. The RME amp/dac is neutral and when I had the dt-990's they still were too bass heavy for me hooked into the RME. But hay, they may be fine for you. Its really hard recommending headphones.

RottenRodneyAlso if you read the first comments on this thread I made a big mistake on not waiting for the hifimans to completely break in before giving an opinion. I am now gun shy about recommendations for phones. I dont want to steer someone wrong.
