Wow, I was really looking forward to buying this until I read everyones comments regarding how bad the USB interconnect is. I was going to buy this specifically for its portability, its built in power supply (I already have a Sabaj Da2), and the op amp rolling.
Do any xd-05 owners succesfully use this as a portable amp on the go? Or is it just not worth it? Of course it would make a nice desktop amp, althtough if I'm going to do that I'd rather get the smsl m6 or m8a.

slugmanMan, people are really giving this dac/amp a bad rap. Can't believe only 3 people have bought it. I love it, and use it in both USB and AUX-In amp-only mode. I tested the optical in and it works fine too.
It does suffer from Chinese-cheap-gear-itis and if you don't like that, stay away. For me, the cheap-ass USB cable they supplied was absolutely crap, always disconnecting. Not sure which end it was (probably both!). I had a USB extension cable lying around, and that works great. Threw the provided cable in the garbage. XDuoo would do so much better if they provided higher quality accessories, good quality branded Windows drivers, and better documentation/customer service... Maybe better QA and fit-and-finish too. For example, the drivers on the included disc didn't work and I had to hunt down the right ones online. Thankfully it is plug-and-play on the Mac.
The back USB plug is a standard USB-A Male, so you need a USB-A female for it. So a USB extension cord works great. There are other DACs that use the same USB-A Male connector, so it's odd but not unheard of. I wish they'd have just used the micro-USB everyone has on their cell phones and like the Schitt Fulla2, like they did for the charging port. Meh.
With a good cable, I never get disconnects. I often use this in my car for long trips with a Nexus 5X (using a USB-C to USB-A Female cable, sometimes also with that extension cable to make it longer) and it works great. Sounds amazing.
This amp has lots of power! I bought it after watching this ZReview on YouTube because I needed something stronger than my Schitt Fulla2 to power Fostex T50RP3's. It does a good job with those cans and has worked well with everything else I throw at it, including IEM's. It never even gets warm. That review is at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve2HfON4330
Anyway, I'm super happy with it overall. Most of the
time I use it as a desktop USB DAC with Win10 and sometimes OSX alone or going into a Darkvoice 336SE. I also use it to watch loud movies at night, in the car on long trips, and in those cases the battery comes in very handy.

slugmanI don't have a problem with the usb on mine. I bought my own cable before it even arrived. I was ready for my xduoo. I have it connected to my desktop and I connect it to my headphones or my amp. Works fine. The only problem I have with mine is that the knob that turns the unit on, and is also the volume knob. Doesn't always click. It has to click so the unit can turn on. Mine can spin and nothing. I learned that if I press the knob into the unit and turn, it will work all the time. Honestly that doesn't bug me much so I'm a very happy customer.
Also zeos videos, nice xD

trapnineYour passionate response has seriously made me reconsider my decision. However since this is a Massdrop purchase, I didn't want to take any chances with something that I may end up returning.

slugmanI think that's wise! Massdrop has quite the strict return policy. I always think thrice anytime I buy something here (but they still get me more than I'd admit to my wife). FYI I got my xd-05 open-box from blinq, which was a no-brainer with their discount price and easy return policy. The original owner probably returned it because of the crummy cable, so the original retailer's loss was my gain. (Got my darkvoice there too, and it had a hum that went away after a couple days of tube burning-in. Then got a laptop that just needed a BIOS update to fix a display bug. Tinkerer's paradise I guess!)

slugmanSupplied cables are crap, but cheap to replace, unless you have an iPhone (like me), then you need the legit Apple CCK cable which is a total rip-off. I carry mine around the house all the time stacked on my phone with Command Strips. Male USB has caused me no problems. That combo is NOT practical for a pocket however - way too bulky and heavy, and the connection cable ”loop” will be under stress. Drives my 6XXs great with heaps of headroom left over and makes my IEMs sound better too.

trapnineIs it too loud for sensitive IEMs? that was a problem I had with fulla 2.

stalepieNo, I don't think so. I use it with Shure IEM's a lot in the car or in bed when I don't want to disturb the wife, and the combo works well on both low and middle gain. High gain it's too much for nearly all my headphones.

trapnineWhat optical cable works with this? 3.5mm?

Ben4CansYes, the 3.5mm "Mini Toslink" is what you need. I leave a Toslink-to-mini-Toslink adapter attached to the regular full size Toslink optical cable coming out of my PC, and just pop it right into the 'digital' port on the back of the XD-05.
