So in light of the USB interconnect warnings, I think I'll opt for the Topping NX4DSD http://www.tpdz.net/en/products/nx4dsd/index.htm (which is available at Ali express for the same price as the xd-05). These are comparible units for sure. Although the xd-05 has a more powerful amp, the nx4dsd actually has less distortion than the xd-05 THD+N < .0009% @ 1khz output = 140mw(32ohm! The nx4dsd even supports up to pcm768 and dsd512! The xd-05 however has a much prettier display, and the ability to roll op amps. Uggh I was seriously about to buy the xd-05. You guys sure no one has had a positive portable experience with these guys that don't require using putty?

sirkuttinNice good to know. Im still a little skeptical though. I intend to use this primarily at work, and although it will sit at my desk sometimes it will mostly sit in my pocket. However I may still purchase this down the road to use on my desk at home.

indi_guyVery true. However the main point i was trying to communicate is that the sampling ability of the nx4dsd dac is technically superior to the xd-05 dac. Im no canine so any thd+n less than .001 will be impossible for me to detect, i really mentioned it for a basis of comparison.

slugmanI threw the included glitchy USB cable away and used a USB extension I had sitting around. It now works perfectly, no disconnects even if I wiggle it. Seems xduoo shot themselves in the foot by supplying the world's worst USB cable with this thing. It really was a horribly made cable!

nunocostaThat Onkyo looks really nice. I wonder why the freq is capped at 96khz though. Probably has something to do with syncing w/ that high precision clock. From the 5102 burr brown specs, it looks like they purposefully stepped down the supported frequencies to ensure optimal performance w/ the high precision clock. http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/pcm5101.pdf. My assessment? If you have 4 bills to spend than i'd be curious to check out the Onkyo. If you don't plan on being mobile with your device (as in carrying it with you in your pocket), the Xduoo xd-05 would def be a great pick. If you want to support dsd512 and pcm 756, the nx4dsd is the way to go.

slugmanHello there. This may be grasping at straws but as I mention below, my xd-05 has no connection issues. I have tested it's use on a flight and it has been flawless. Anyway, I am offering it for sale if you would like.
I have a Burson v5i opamp ($50+ dollars after shipping) inside of it. I will look and make sure, but I should have the original box as well. I can offer it for $200 shipped. You can get it faster not having to wait for the next drop and not have to worry about getting one that has poor soldering. I will also ship out the original op-amp as well.

nunocostaThe HA200 is supposed to be good... I think it's the oldest of those three... it is like the "sister" unit of the TEAC HA-P50, which sometimes has been sold here in its special edition form. Each of these have different opamps, but are otherwise very similar. HA-P50 has OPA1652, HA-P50 has OPA1602 (supposed to be a little better), and Onkyo DAC HA200 went with MUSES 8920. I think HA-P50 regular edition and HA200 came out around 2014 and the SE model maybe in 2016.
There is some information in this thread, you can see, if you search for "onkyo"...
https://www.head-fi.org/search/6348971/?q=onkyo&t=post&o=date&c[thread]=704097
Some described the Onkyo as having a warmer, darker, less neutral sound than the TEAC, while others described the TEAC as having boosted bass. I have the TEAC and it's hard to say. It seems like a mostly neutral, clean, sharp sound (I like it), but my experience with these devices is fairly minimal in how they compare to each other and I don't usually hear a lot of difference between them. Certainly I wouldn't describe the TEAC as "dark", though, so perhaps the Onkyo fits that mold more (or that could be people biased by the looks of it).
Someone else here was telling me the Xduoo XD-05 is a much better buy than the TEAC. I got mine pretty cheap though. I agree that the Topping looks really good, like the one to beat these days and have been impressed with how some of their other stuff measures at audiosciencereview.com
Here is a review of the Onkyo:
https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/onkyo-dac-ha200-d-a-converter-and-headphone-amplifier.21121/
which says, "Quite a powerful and dynamic sound, which I didn't think was possible from a battery powered unit, based on my experience with the FiiO E07k. It is warmer and a tiny bit thicker, slower and darker than my desktop rig, with potent, nicely textured and accurate bass, which is pretty well controlled." ... among other things.
some Teac reviews: https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/teac-ha-p50b-portable-dac-amp.20066/

Don't get your hopes up too much with these sort of products... they often make little difference in sound quality... it is hyped up in the audiophile market, but phones and PCs sound very much the same. It's more useful to get an amp if you need the driving power or have noisy audio output from your other source rather than hearing more details and so on. They shouldn't have boosted bass or sound profiles if they are accurate.

slugmanWhat did you end up getting slugman? I'm thinking of getting a 2nd unit myself to play with, maybe that Topping, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

trapnineHey Trapnine, I ended up getting the NX4DSD and I am very happy with my purchase. My first dac was the Sabaj Da2, which has the lower revision ESS9018Q2C, whereas the NX4DSD has the ESS9038pro. I found that the 9038 isn't quite as bright as the 9018Q2c. That opinion may change however when I pair it with a double-armature iem, so I'll update you in a week or so when I get my kinera h3's. It also pairs excellently with my daily drivers--the massdrop x nuforce EDC (6.3mm dynamic driver).
In regards to the amplification, it drives my HD579's very well. In fact, use it with the low gain and low bass settings, and it still sounds great. However I've yet to acquire any high impedance cans to test it with. I'd love to jump on the HD600 drop, but I also dont want to wait until June. I'm considering the GermanMaestro GMP 8.35 or the massdrop x AKG 7XX.
That being said, I still would very much like to try out the XD-05, and I am very bummed that the NX4DSD doesn't include a digital/COAX input (cannot pair w/ a dap), or balanced output (which neither have). However I knew these limitations beforehand. Despite the lower sampling rates, the XD-05 has the AK4490, and I am eager to check the Velvet Sound signature they're known for.
The NX4DSD servers the purpose I got it for very well--using the OTG function w/ my Android phone, where I keep in my pocket so I can carry it around at work. 5/5

slugmanWith portable use, you'll most likely buy whatever a cable that works with your phone, or find a 3rd party USB extension. So the poor stock cable is a fixable annoyance.
