rwoodsmurphyIf you've never tried any amp, but you're interested in trying one, I would say this is a pretty cheap entry point to give it a go. From here, you can see what you like or don't like about it and can possibly put those preferences into words reasonable enough for someone who is knowledgeable in these things to make a better suggestion to you to try. But really, it's all about giving something a try in the first place. And I would wager that this cheap little amp might increase your enjoyment in your music with those headphones, even if just a tad, compared to not using an amp at all.

rwoodsmurphyi run my 558s from the DAC portion of my SMSL SD-793ll. The amp is of less quality than the DAC but the DAC provides more than enough power for them. My Superlux HD 668Bs can be cleanly run and i have not yet tested my VE monks which are 64 ohms. It all depends on how powerful your source is. TypicallyI find that many DACs and in specific iphones will run 56ohms and less very wel. If you find bassy headphones that are not bassy, you mah need amp. Cheaper, less well performing smartphones maybnot drive more than 32ohms. iPhones and HTC apparently have very decent amps.

rwoodsmurphyThis is not a bad amp for some headphones. I have use it with a Cozoy Astrapi for a super-light rig to go, and it can drive my 47ohm Fostex and even my 80ohm Fostex headphones to decent levels. It won't win any awards, but for the price, it is a giveaway for you to try it out and see if you like it. It packs more punch than the IFi Nano amp for my iFi nano DSD, and does pretty well with almost any 32ohm headphone. I have not tried it with IEM's, and it may show a bit more harshness with them. But if you have one of the newer micro DAC's that have shit for output, this can be a big help, and makes for a decent ultralight setup. You do have to play with one of the 3 or 4 EQ presets to find the one that works best. You can not just plug it in and expect it to sound perfect. You also need to adjust the output from your DAC. If you just plug it in at full volume, you will overload it with distortion from the start. Turn the DAC volume all the way down, and slowly work it up until you get enough sound to amplify. If you need more top volumme, turn up the DAC output a bit.
