Long lasting with great audio
I have had zero issues with noise due to bad circuits. The apps are clunky but not needed. the 2 zone system isn't that great. You are limited with what inputs can be used to play audio to the 2nd zone. If you are using this strictly as a 7.2 4k receiver with atmos this is a great unit. Other than that there are better options. It was worth the purchase for me and I'd buy again. Just lacks in features functionality that others might want.

Is a great receiver to get up and running from a beginner's standpoint. However to get height channels and a whole 7.1 to work this is not the receiver for you. Also they would be move you to get additional amplification specifically for 5.1. Like I have done. I can tell you I can tell you that with certainty it is a necessity to use additional amplification. The amount of distortion that will occur when running all of my elec debut 2.0 speakers in my home theater . I own all of their speakers that have a 6 and a 1/2 inch mid bass driver. To this and these speakers do need much power considerably so since everything but the center channel is 6ohms. I can tell you without certainty however from extrapolating my experience when I move into a much bigger role my amplifiers will not suffer however to energize that space with sound I will need turn things up and in doing so the Yamaha receiver will need to have a more powerful that value on its volume when doing so we will start to introduce more noise noise from the electronic circuits being pushed harder this receiver is great for small rooms and my emotive a power amps work seamlessly they don't even get hot he would not know they were on however to that end an upgrade on the receiver into a bigger Room my Room is 15 by 30 if we were closer to 20 by 30 I would need more volume and thus getting into the noisy part of the volume range for my Yamaha receiver. Bear that in mind it does its job I do not get height channels with the or addition of my surround sound back channels this is not optimal. I would like to see a 7.1 point to at the very least not a 5.2.2

I set the stereo up last night and it's working fine. I upgraded as I needed HDCP 2.2 support and my previous unit (also a Yamaha) didn't support it. 4K video is passing through nicely and I haven't run into any issues so far with it being a refurb unit. My only disappointment is that there is already an identical drop running on the same unit for $100 less than I paid last week.

aschaeferThis sucks man I just got mine too and would've rather paid $100 less for that one. Note that it's not identical, that drop is for the 5810 model whereas we got the 7810. But the differences are pretty minimal.. doesn't look to me like 7810 is worth an extra $100 from this comparison: http://faq.yamaha.com/us/en/article/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/tsr/10686/9491

aschaeferOk, I did a little research of my own, by reading the owners manuals of both receivers. Our 7810 does offer some significant advantages. One is that it has preamp outputs, so you can use a separate amp or either powered or passive speakers (I think). Another is that it has 9 speaker outputs (but still only 7 amps), so you can use presence speakers in both the front and the back. There are 2 amps that handle all 4 presence channels, and the amp switches back and forth depending on whether the situation requires front presence or rear presence. The 5810 only has front presence. Also the 7810 has more power with an extra 15 watts on every channel. And the 7810 allows you to use 4 ohm front speakers but the 5810 doesn't. I'm sure there's more that I missed, since I didn't read everything.
These advantages might not be worth $100 (I'd still rather have the 5810 for 250), but at least we get something extra.

Had to send back due to power drops. Great unit otherwise. UPDATE: I initially reached out to Yamaha (John H below) about the defective unit and was told the following: [o] [2018-06-20 14:09:36] JohnH:Sorry Massdrop is not an authorized Yamaha dealer. [o] [2018-06-20 14:10:16] JohnH:There's no warranty for buying this on Massdrop. [c] [2018-06-20 14:10:35] Cameron:They seem to think there is. [o] [2018-06-20 14:11:17] JohnH:That's not actually a dealer either, they are more of a place you can sell items on. [c] [2018-06-20 14:11:41] Cameron:I'm interested in the manufacturer's waranty [o] [2018-06-20 14:12:34] JohnH:Sorry there's no warranty. We have authorized dealers on our website. [o] [2018-06-20 14:13:10] JohnH:If you stick with places like Best Buy, Costco, Amazon, Crutchfield and buy it new, not used or from a marketplace seller, there is a full warranty. [c] [2018-06-20 14:13:22] Cameron:It was refurb [c] [2018-06-20 14:13:41] Cameron:Does that matter? [o] [2018-06-20 14:14:22] JohnH:Nothing on Massdrop has any warranty. I'm sorry that's not a dealer. It's not much different from an EBay or Craigslist type of website. [c] [2018-06-20 14:15:15] Cameron:Right. I get that. I was wondering how Yamaha does refurb items. Do they have some warranty that could help me in this case? [c] [2018-06-20 14:18:48] Cameron:JohnH? [o] [2018-06-20 14:19:33] JohnH:If you purchase this from an authorized dealer we can help. [o] [2018-06-20 14:19:54] JohnH:Massdrop isn't authorized to sell any Yamaha products. [c] [2018-06-20 14:21:46] Cameron:Okay. I'll take it up with them. [c] [2018-06-20 14:23:05] Cameron:ty [s] [2018-06-20 14:32:05] Chat session has been terminated
Massdrop told me they couldn't give me another unit, but I could send it back for a refund. So I sent it back. Then Yamaha email about 2 weeks later: Thank you for contacting Yamaha Support. ycasupport@yamaha.com Regarding the TSR-7810BL, I am sorry for the confusion. If you have your receipt from Massdrop and the serial number and your phone and address we can provide some help. Please respond with that .
Not sure what they can do. I've asked them & I'll post their response here.
Update: Turns out Yamaha would have paid for the repair of the unit. Too bad their customer service didn't give me the right information at first. Will try Yamaha again.

So far the receiver is working perfectly. I replace an older Yamaha that only had 2 HDMI inputs and no 4K passthrought as I plan to upgrade to a 4K tv soon. only part I haven't tested yet is the the 4K. Any ideas how I could test this without yet having a 4K TV? May need to borrow one from someone..

After a quick firmware update, it supported Dolby Vision from my Apple TV 4K and pass through audio to my TV (I don’t have a decent speaker setup yet, but I’m sure this thing will handle just about anything)
