Product Description
Maybe you were looking at the Yamaha HS8 studio monitor to complete your home setup, but you wouldn’t mind losing a little bit of the low-end response if it means dramatically reducing the size and weight of the speaker. Built with a 5-inch woofer and able to fit into nearly any home system, the Yamaha HS5 studio monitor brings you powerful performance that doesn’t take up the entire desk Read More

One of the best purchases I ever made
Great sound quality, only lacking a bit of punch on the lows, but that can be fixed with a sub. Build quality is good and look very nice on white.

Amazing
I love the clarity and detail for my near field PC listening needs. And if you choose these boys can get loud but that quality loud that makes it even more enjoyable when you want to get some room filling sound. I usually have these low as is due to living in an apartment and even so the quality come through. I put blackout stickers on the logos because those LEDs are bright hell in low light situations. One caveat I have noticed only recently is that they do not have proper internal shielding. The only reason I discovered this is that I had purchased a BT tx/rx and when it's on nearby there is a decent amount of interference coming through the drivers.

These are reference level studio monitors, and they do a great job at it. Some people may think these lack in the lower frequencies, but that's simply because they sound very neutral and uncolored. Through an Audio GD Master 11 as a preamp/DAC, these sound very crisp and detailed and I enjoy them enough to use as my primary speakers on my PC at home for recording, gaming, casual listening, etc.
If you want something sturdy with a detail oriented sound in a smaller form factor, you won't regret these especially for the price. However, if you're looking for deep growling bass and something with more of a "V shaped" sound signature, these may come off as a bit cold and anemic. Perhaps the larger HS7 or HS8 gives more low end punch but I have not heard those models and didn't have the desk space for them. These near fields may not be for everyone, but since my purchase I haven't had any itch to upgrade.
Side note: I wish I could give these a 4.5 star rating, but chose to round up to 5 instead of down to 4. Also, @dreww makes a good point regarding the shipping boxes. There's no question as to whats sitting on your porch once delivered.

they're great. worth noting that they did ship in their retail/branded box, so you might want to be close by during delivery as they definitely shout "steal me".

Build quality, materials used, and overall aesthetics are top notch here. However, while this version of the Yamaha HS series of near field monitors sounds great, its size limits its ability to reproduce lower bass tones. It leaves something to be desired in its sound profile. It's easy to attribute this lack of low end to the smaller woofer diameter, but I've owned a couple of similar size shelf speakers that have had a greater extension in the bass frequencies. With some refinement, I feel that the Yamaha HS5 can deliver what it is missing. Of course, you can always pair it with the Yamaha HS8S subwoofer, but that's an extra $300. I would recommend just moving up the model line to the Yamaha HS7 or HS8 for better, full-range sound profile.
