JBL LSR-305's are much better for listening and mixing - especially if bass is important to you. HS5 lacks that bass punch requiring a sub-woofer. I have my 305's connected to IFI micro – iDAC2, Sound is amazing. Pair of 305's go for around $200, definitely more bang for the buck. Hope this helps someone.

JDAC44Thanks for the comment. I have been looking at both of these speakers for some time now (not in a rush; I'm currently using Audioengine A5s). The JBLs look like a great option, but I'm torn between the 305s and 308s. Seems the 305s are adequate for most people, and one common "complaint" if you will, that people voice about the 8" speakers in this class is how much room they take up. But I'd be willing to deal with that if the overall output and SQ (particularly bass & midrange) is significantly better.

LateralusYes, 308s are large, thats why I didn't get them. 305s produce plenty of bass for me, to get even more bass you could put a sock in the back ports (still leaving a little room for air to get out) - I tried it and it does work but I decided it wasn't necessary. My recommendation to you would be is to go with the 305s. If you don't think there is not enough bass then get the JBL LSR 310s subwoofer. My thought is pair of 308s go for like $500, if a pair of 305s are purchased as a package along with a 310 they can be had for like $650. Nothing is going to give you more bass like a true subwoofer does. 310s are very good, but yeah its another thing that takes up space on the floor. Also is there a Musicians Friend or a Guitar Center near you to give them a listen?

JDAC44I only have experience with the HS8and I've found the bass response to be more than adequate - but again as a near field monitor for mastering they will only reflect the quality of the mix. For Music and Movie enjoyment I find them really nice. I can't vouch for the 5" version. I would assume the diameter has alot to do with translating low vibrations. Please see my caution on these: These are great speakers - BUT PLEASE SEE MY CAUTION - they are not Warrantied through Massdrop and Yamaha will not honor the warranty because they are not sourced through an authorized Yamaha Dealer.

CHIB67My ears agree with you, HS8 does have better bass response vs HS5 (my earlier comment) - again at least to my ears. On that note, I'm in my late 40's now. Around 6-7 years ago, I realized that the oldest piece of gear I had was...well...me - my ears. Since then every year I've been taking low and high frequency hearing tests and noting the results. So far, year to year the differences are very very minor. But one thing is for sure, minor differences will add up as I (we all) age. Too bad there are no driver updates for our hearing :)

JDAC44No doubt! I'm 51 (man that seems weird) and after growing up farming in Iowa with no hearing protection and years of going to concerts and being up close and personal AND spending a lifetime on headphones I'm battling Tinnitus. Also I'm volume deaf but frequency sensitive - but I can say the HS8's have a great bass response IMO. Even with compromised hearing - considering I do audio for a living - having transparent monitors is a must and I find that the HS8 tell no lies - if the mix sucks they let you know:)
