Just had a quick question. Im trying to get a surround sound setup whether it will be 5.1, 7.1, whatever. I guess Im wondering if it would be odd to get 5/7 of these speakers..? Or 2 then the rest are from another brand? Im a noob obviously so, apologize for the confusion.

ZVRecordsIt would be a tad odd to purchase 5-7 studio reference monitors as a surround setup, yes. Usually surround setups are passive speakers with one central amp/receiver driving them, with these you'd have to set up 5-7 power sources and find a receiver that outputs non-amplified surround sound audio. Realistically you'd be better off buying speakers meant for a surround sound system or just high quality passive speakers and a good receiver, and configuring that way.

ZVRecordsIf you were going to use active monitors for your surround setup, these would be a pretty good choice in a medium sized room. Throw in a couple of nice subs...it would kick ass.

ZVRecordsThese are not designed as optimal for surround sound - depth of field on these monitors is not really designed for a home theater application, IMO.
JUST AN FYI NOTE: I am a big Massdrop Fan and have and still purchase items through Massdrop. Also I own a pair of the YAMAHA HS8 purchased and these are FANTASTIC NEAR FIELD MONITORS IN MY OPINION. HOWEVER - "B"E" W"A"R"N"E"D" -- MASSDROP AND THEIR VENDOR FOR YAMAHA MONITORS ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO SELL YAMAHA. THE MANUFACTURER 3 YEAR PARTS AND LABOR WARRANTY ON THESE MONITORS "I"S" "V"O"I"D" WITH A MASSDROP PROOF OF PURCHASE. I PURCHASED THE HS8 on the last drop and after about a year the power supply began to fail. AGAIN - MASSDROP IS NOT AUTHORIZED to SELL YAMAHA. IT TOOK MASSDROP 6 WEEKS TO AUTHORIZE A RETURN. Because I was using these on an ongoing project I had to PURCHASE ANOTHER PAIR THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. With the time and effort the "Discount" I got through Massdrop which ended up being about $100.00 total COST ME $1,000 dollars in time and the second set. Unless they explicitly state on the drop info that "comes with manufacturer warranty" (which some drops do) ASSUME THE MANUFACTURER WARRANT IS VOID. Hope this helps those of you who are considering joining the drop. I LEARNED THE HARD WAY...Although I LOVE THE HS8...however I don't know what the reduction in woofer diameter will do to bass response. On the HS8 there is no need for a sub woofer. Great Monitors - just decide whether or not you are cool buying them and giving up the (3) Year Parts and Labor Warranty that you won't have.

CHIB67Of course they're not 'designed' for "home theater", but they are flexible enough and will sound superb in a medium to compact setting.

CHIB67What about these accurate, phase-linear, dynamic, bi-amped monitors do you think makes them less optimal for surround use? What do you mean by 'depth of field'?

CHIB67ha. I do, and that is how I realize how silly, and misconceived your post is. You're talking PURE nonsense. I get that you think it makes you sound knowledgeable; that's what misconceptions do. "depth of field"? yes, they are near-field monitors and are designed to be phase aligned at short distance. That does not mean there is less coherence at longer distances. Perhaps you are referring to the other misconception regarding off-axis dispersion of so-called near-field monitors...
Speaking of silly, you define silly with you spastic warrantee W"A"R"N"I"N"G and your passive-aggressive 'best of luck' BS.

audibleAs someone who makes his living with audio and has for 40 years, thank you for spelling out this silly person's BS. I have a surround obsessed friend in the 'Marin Co film industry' who has an 11.2 system based around these very monitors (and two subs) - in his freaking office - and it is phenomenal. Near field like Genelec are commonly used in high end 'pro-sumer' theater with hair-raising results. Your summation of the misconceptions the design and function of near field monitors is spot on.

jaffeWell, you try to help someone by sharing your experience and you're sure to piss someone off. It's too bad in today's world you get trolled every time you post something. I was merely stating that "near field" by DEFINITION isn't designed for HI FI or to translate well to a "big" space". That being said can they? Sound Good? Of Course! It's all in the ear of the listener.
But again, professional or not - we are only as good as our mix. If you like the sound, then have at it. I've got to get back to work.

CHIB67" I was merely stating that "near field" by DEFINITION isn't designed for HI FI or to translate well to a "big" space". " And it was MERELY being pointed out to you that what you are trying to relate is a MISCONCEPTION. You are wrong. As @audible said correctly: "near-field monitors and are designed to be phase aligned at short distance. That does not mean there is less coherence at longer distances. " You are wrong. He was correct. This is not a matter of opinion. This is fact. "Well, you try to help someone by sharing your experience and you're sure to piss someone off. " You would do much better in that regard by not behaving like a condescending, passive-aggressive prick.
"But again, professional or not - we are only as good as our mix. If you like the sound, then have at it. I've got to get back to work." There you go again... This has nothing to to with skill, and I really doubt yours. I trust your 'opinion' about as far as I can spit a rat. You're just a blowhard. I've run into way too many clueless, bloviating fools like you that think they know something about 'the mix'...dime a dozen.

jaffeFunny. The guy seems more hung up on semantics. "near field" by DEFINITION isn't designed for HI FI or to translate well to a "big" space". Logical fallacy! NFMs are not NOT designed for HIFI. Their NF specs have ZERO to do with how well they fill a room. ZERO. Clowns like Bryan always refuse to be wrong and will change the subject and resort to passive-aggressive dismissals. It's uncanny.
