TylerTyler, I see this post is three years old but the drop is back again - so the conversation is relevant.
QUESTION: can you confirm that this drop on the HS5's posted July of 2018 - please confirm that these monitors will have NO FACTORY WARRANTY. (Apologies in advance for the ALL CAPS -I'm not "yelling" there is jut no other way to emphasize in this text.)
I purchased a pair of HS8's on the last HS8 drop in 2017 and after about a year the power supply failed in one.
In attempting to get warranty authorized repair dealer I was told by Yamaha that Massdrop was not an authorized US Yamaha Dealer. "No worries," Yamaha said - JUST GET THE NAME OF THE AUTHORIZED US DEALER MASSDROP USED AND YAMAHA WILL HONOR THE REPAIR.
After 6 weeks of back and forth from support - I was told that MASSDROP WOULD NOT REVEAL THE VENDOR. Thankfully Massdrop is replacing the bad monitor but it will still be without any warranty. I am an enthusiastic and frequent Massdrop member but I learned this the hard way. Because no one in a position of authority paid any attention to the urgency of the request (these are my primary mastering monitors) I was forced to purchase another pair from Sweetwater. If you factor all the time I spent - in addition to having to drop another $600.00 on an WARRANTY ELIGBLE authorized pair plus the time and trouble plus the hit I'll have to take selling them as they are now used - the $50.00 I saved by purchasing through MASSDROP ENDED UP COSTING ME OVER $1,000 DOLLARS.
I've learned that unless it's expressly stated in the description that these are warranted you have to assume that the source is not an authorized dealer. I think your "caveat emptor" approach to "ghosting" the warranty subject is with all due respect: Fraudulent. If you are offering something that normally comes with a three year parts and labor covered item and by PURCHASING THROUGH MASSDROP VOIDS THE WARRANTY YOU SHOULD DISCLOSE THAT
I still purchase items from Massdrop - however I no longer even look at anything critical to how I earn my living and pay my mortgage nor do I consider purchasing anything high dollar unless I contact the manufacturer specifically with this. I also discovered that you are selling other high end brands (DynAudio) for one that not only DOES NOT AUTHORIZE SALE OF THEIR BRAND THROUGH THE GREY MARKET BUT OUTRIGHT FORBIDS them. (I noticed the one DynAudio Drop you had is now "Inactive") I guess they got ahead of it and killed it before it could go live - I say that because you don't show any units sold - only people that joined the drop - I might be wrong...again sometimes you simply "OMIT INFORMATION" so all I see is that the "Drop is Inactive" but here's the response from DynAudio:
"DynaudioUSA3 "I can tell you that these speakers are not authorized by Dynaudio to be sold at Massdrop. We are currently investigating who is selling them on this platform. Again these products are NOT sold be approval from the manufacturer. "
Don't get me wrong - I'm still "hooked on the drop". And while I'm still joining drops - because sometimes you guys do get the best price on a new pair of Oakley Sunglasses - I'm no longer considering MD a trusted vendor when it comes to gear I make my living with.
Please give Kudos to your first line support team - I worked with Marriah on this support / replacement issue and while she had no authority and had to wait over 6 WEEKS to get resolution from San Francisco - she was very diligent and supportive with me on the replacement of this item.
Tyler - listen, are so many faceless "discount driven" internet forums out there - you should really try to build that sense of "community" vibe you present with what a "community" provides:
1. CONSUMER ADVOCACY - don't just "say nothing" and put the burden of proof on the buyer - that's a typical Social Media cop out. It's easy to hide on the internet.
2. ACCOUNTABILITY - MASSDROP OWNED UP TO THIS WITH MY UNIT. However I had to launch a shit storm in order to get it taken care of. If I hadn't been diligent I don't know if I would have gotten a response. We don't need more cheap stuff. We need a partner that doesn't conveniently omit critical information related to critical gear. I hope my experience can help others not experience a "Massloss" from "Massdrop".
3. TRANPARENCY - Now hear me here - "OMMISSION IS NOT TRANSPARENCY" - "OMMISSION IS FRAUD". If the gear comes factory sealed with a 3 year parts and labor warranty card in the packing that is worthless because my proof of purchase simply says "Massdrop" on it - you have an OBLIGATION TO DISCLOSE CHANGE IN WARRANTY ELIGIBILITY. I know you have some vague language in your terms and conditions -but if you mention "WARRANTIED" in the description you should simple state: "NON WARRANTIED" in the description. The last thing we need are more buried terms and conditions.
Yeah I get that you can't list EVERYTHING about the item - there's always going to be something that is missed But you neglect the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE? WARRANTY? C'mon. When it HAS one you make a point of stating it - but when you've sourced it through a grey market you just conveniently OMIT the warranty information? It's simple balance of disclosure - when it has a warranty you state what the warranty is. If the WARRANTY is VOID if purchased through this forum STATE THAT THE WARRANTY IS VOID if purchased through the forum. Some folks smarter than I already knew that. Some of them were helpful with intelligent advice - others not so much (welcome to the internet - endless fuel for the passive aggressive cowards in the world.
And the LAST THING a "COMMUNITY" does NOT DO:
4. ASK FORGIVENESS RATHER THAN PERMISSION" This only works with Engagement Rings and Surprise Parties - NOT WITH GEAR.
I do thank Massdrop for doing the right thing in my case - however I would venture a guess that you have some community members that can't easily just plunk down another $600.00. I make money with my gear - so to me it was a necessary purchase to protect a deadline and necessary because I had already mastered part the project on the HS8's. I would have done my client a disservice if I didn't deliver a balanced consistent mastered project. But in reading the forums I can see that alot of community members work hard and spend limited funds with you because of price. I hope none of them were put in my situation.
I always try to be respectful in my communications with vendors and with community members. I don't hide my identity on forums - you can easily find my contact information if you would like to discuss.
Thanks, BC
