Noob question powered monitors. Can I simply connect a pair of these to my blu ray player directly? Or do I need a mixer/device of some sort.

BuckbrickNah not really, you could just use rca to trs and you'd be fine but for these to shine you would want a speaker amp

SparklybutThese are powered monitors.
A Pre-amp is what you need. Not a speaker amp.

BuckbrickYou could connect them directly with the right adapters/cable. You would need a 1/4" male mono to RCA Male cable for each channel (left/right) from the back of your bluray player. They do make these cables, check sweetwater.com or amazon.

BuckbrickYou will need some way to control the volume. Also, the best results are obtained by connecting using XLR cables. Best way to do this will be to use a small mixer. If you connect it using RCA cables you may get some hum and crackles etc.

Yakovhe doesn't need a pre amp. blu ray players output at line level and the amps built into the speakers will bring it up to speaker or power level.
