Amazed at the state of the art in yo-yos. Lube??? Wow. I've been in a coma.

rayce444This isn't even in the upper tier or anything. This is still a relatively small, responsive yoyo for beginner play. Things get crazy in the upper echelon of throws. Titanium, bimetal designs, ceramic ball bearings, crazy weight distribution, etc.

rayce444https://shop.yoyoexpert.com Check out this site and feel free to explore! If you really want your mind blown, look up Luftverk Yoyos, which are often considered the "Holy Grails" of yoyos. Also, feel free to check out r/Throwers on Reddit and ask anything you'd like!

NyarkoSanI just visited Luftverk......WOW!!! Pang's story was just incredible and you just have to admire someone with that much tenacity and passion. His creations are pure art and, I'm sure, state of the art. Amazing. Thanks again. Time to find my yoyo.

rayce444Yeah, the troubles he pushed himself to go through just to make a product that he knows full well would only be appreciated fully by a minority of a minority is remarkable. Well, if you need any help finding a yoyo to start back up with, feel free to ask!

NyarkoSanIs there a definitive bang for the buck performance yoyo?

Shazb0tThat's a rather difficult question in all honesty, as past a certain point in terms of skill it's all up to personal preference. For absolute beginners, the best thing I can recommend is a Replay or Replay Pro from YoyoFactory. The Replay is responsive (it comes back up with the flick of the wrist) while the Replay Pro is unresponsive (it requires a bind to return to your hand). For 15 bucks, there are very few throws that can easily carry out as many tricks as the Replay pro, but that being said it does vibe like crazy and some people dislike its considerable heft. For a bit more a good yoyo would be the YoyoFactory Shutter or the CLYW Big Dipper, at $45 and $35 respectively. The Shutter is Gentry Stein's signature yoyo and while I personally don't really like the feel of the Shutter, it is a great all-rounder that handles anything you put it through. The Big Dipper is basically a plastic version of the $150 CLYW Borealis, which is Zach Gormley's signature yoyo and my personal favorite due to its ability to do tech combos everyday like a boss, even if it does cost the yoyo some of its speed and horizontal play. The Big Dipper puts these characteristics in a cheaper yet still high-quality form, and although it is still a plastic throw when for $10 more you could have the all-metal Shutter, Horizon, or any other mid-grade 6061 aluminum throw, I think it plays better than many metal yoyos in the same price range. As for expensive stuff, "bang for your buck" translates to "what style do you prefer?" For instance I focus a lot on tech and rarely play horizontal or in speed combos, so I prefer stuff like the CLYW Borealis, Radical Seas Oracle, One Drop Gradient, and Tropic Spins Shipwreck to something like the YoyoRecreation Draupnir. I hope this helps somewhat!

NyarkoSanThanks for the info! I ended up checking out some of the sites you mentioned including the Throwers Reddit and learned about the YoYoFactory Adventure. Grabbed a B-grade Shutter for $25 shipped. That should do the trick for some nostalgic fun.

Shazb0tGood choice! If you want to check out just how far the Shuttter can be pushed. check out Gentry Stein's 2014 World Yoyo Contest Performance. Just make sure you learn how to bind the yoyo as soon as possible in case you don't yet know how to do that.
