I joined this drop specifically to pair it with the DT880 600 Ohm that were in another drop. I'm currently running a Zero DAC/Amp modified with an Earth HDAM and an Alps RK27 potentiometer w/ HD650s and HD595s. I'm looking forward to trying out the Beyers on the Yulong, although I'm prepared to potentially have to get a separate amplification stage due to the DT880's impedance (and in preparation for getting a set of HD-800s later this year). I'm hoping this Yulong will drive the DT880s well (and kind of hoping I can get some more life out of my Zero as well). I'd be curious to know the thoughts of anybody who has both the Zero and the Yulong, and both the Yulong and some DT880 or DT990 600 Ohm cans.

After everything gets into my hands, I'll try to remember to write up a review and post a comment.

TristorI can't comment on your exact setup, but I do have a similar one. I'm running a Zero DAC/Amp into a Schiit Valhalla to my DT880 250ohm, with OPA627 opamps in the Zero. I personally found the Zero's headamp to be too bright for my tastes, and with a smaller soundstage. However, I LOVE the Zero dac, and use it as the source for both my full stereo setup and headphones. Chances are, if you go with the Yulong, you'll be better off using the built-in DAC, as it is likely a tier above the Zero. Even if that only provides a minimal difference, it's still a more elegant solution than running the Zero's line-out into the Yulong's headamp.

That said, if you need to increase the gain to deal with your 600ohms, the Zero's line-out can be used as a pre-out by pressing the "Phones" selector with no headphones plugged in, activating the volume pot. This, I believe, will provide you with more than enough power. Personally I prefer not to use that headamp circuitry as a preamp, because it closes the soundstage a bit and generally just doesn't sound as good as 'Zero DAC -> Nicer Amp', but if you really want the Yulong and it doesn't have the juice, Zero will take you there.

Edit: Ahh, and it looks like the Yulong is only usable with digital sources... So it can't really be pre-amped if it's underpowered, it can only act as the pre-amp. Unfortunate to say the least - how can it even be used with a turntable? For me, that's a big issue.

onelivewire@onelivewire

I was planning on getting a Schiit Lyr to use with the Yulong D100 Mk2 if it doesn't quite cut it by itself. I have a feeling I may end up doing that anyway, since I'm either getting the HD800s or a set of HE-500s next, both of which will need the juice as well. I was considering getting the Valhalla since I feel like the DT880s will really love some tubes, but felt like the Lyr would be a good compromise while attaining a higher output power. What do you think of your Valhalla? If I go all-tube, I was also considering a Little Dot MK IV SE or the HiFiMan EF-5.

TristorI'm in the same boat, looking to pair this with DT880 600s but want to know first if it can drive them well.
cstewart@cstewart

We tested the DT880 600ohm/Yulong D100 MKII pairing and had great results. Plugged into the high output impedance headphone jack, we never had to turn the volume knob more than a quarter turn to reach comfortable listening volumes.

Made me wonder what would happen if we turned it up all the way...

WillThat's pretty useful information. Thanks.

cstewartFrom Will's comment it sounds like it will. I will probably end up getting the Lyr anyway since I'm planning to get some HE-500s or another planar magnetic driver headphone later, and I feel like some tubes in the path will do the DT880 good. It's nice to know though that I don't have to rush on acquiring the amp, since the combo unit will be able to drive them fine in the interim. I just am concerned that using all solid state with a fairly analytical sounding set of headphones will lead to them being rather fatiguing over time, and I think the extra warmth in tone that tubes add will certainly help.

TristorThe Yulongs amp is good, but it is primarily a dac, I think you will find a fair benefit to using an external amp and the yulong for a source specifically for the high impedance cans that want a bit more colour to their sound. But thats being nitpicky, compared to the zero with this you shouldn't have an upgrade itch for a long while.

@Nguyen I have to say I am not that impressed with the Aune T1 + Denon D7000 combo. I need to listen more before I can be conclusive, but so far I much much much much prefer it with AKG K242HD, its like they were made for each other, some tube goodness for the analytical AKG's and high current into low impedance = bliss. The denons are a much more Clean clean clean source kind of headphone because they are so coloured already. And thats where the Yulong comes in. THe combo had a fair following on Head-fi while i was there.

Also the AKG K550 was a FANTASTIC match for the Aune, but it does need some EQ because AKG boosted those highs to kingdom come, the Aune even managed to pull the K550's wonky upper mids into line, which is no mean feat, my review of them was very critical of this on HF.

WiR3DI'm in luck then. I ordered a Schiit Lyr and the HE-500s last night from Kraft Street Audio via Amazon, and they should arrive Monday, well in advance of the Yulong. My only dilemma now is where to find some Telefunken E288CC NOS tubes to roll into the Lyr.

WiR3DThank you sir, my wallet now hates you even more hahaha. But thanks for your input I guess I am now in. I need to ban myself from here for awhile after this lol.
