Any experiencedish watch guys here? I'm a little worried about damage to the glass - have you known this kind of crystal to shatter? My last watch (Timex) had a domed crystal that constantly got scraped against things for a few years. I don't do it as much, but the fear remains. Any advice?

RyanoftheislesThis has got a sapphire crystal, which is the hardest material to scratch, short of diamond. Basically, it doesn't get any better than that for watch crystals. Definitely won't shatter and will be very difficult to scratch. That's one of the selling points of this watch for me. Hard to find a sapphire crystal and automatic movement below $300!

RyanoftheislesI can say I am experienced-ish lol. I have a few microbrands and this is one that is on my radar for a while. The glass is sapphire so you need a real good diamond tip to scratch it on this watch. The polished areas will most likely scratch first before sapphire does. Timex usually uses hardex which is a type of glass, but does scratch over time, but sapphire is pretty much an industry standard on premium watches like the Rolex's, Omega's and Raymond Weil's of the world that will last pretty long and resist scratches for years on normal use.
So if you are looking for crystals that will last, then stay away from watches that have any acrylic domed glass, you'll need a polish to get those scratches out, even toothpaste works in a pinch for those lol. But Sapphire will last.
Perfect example. I have two smartwatches, the LG G Watch R and the Huawei smartwatch. Both are great watches for a techhie like me, but the LG G Watch R has a plastic substrate IIRC and the screen is prone to scratching on normal wear of long sleeve shirts in time without a screen protector, however, since the day I got the Huawei watch, which has sapphire glass, has no protector, is scratch free. But the rest of the watch has microscratches. Hope that helps.

RyanoftheislesSapphire is easier to shatter than acrylic and mineral glass, but I have never had a sapphire crystal shatter due to high impact. It is however one of the hardest materials to scratch besides diamond and Q-Carbon.

RyanoftheislesLike topology said, sapphire crystals shatter more easily than other crystal materials, but the Helmsman is inset, not domed, so getting a direct blow on it strong enough to shatter is unlikely.
