These headphones are very hard to drive. They sound great. Had to set the volume to 95 on gracedesign m9xx to appreciate it but even then felt they still needed more power ... not a good headphone for tube amp for sure ...

tbhariI am looking for some suggestions on dac amps that can reasonably push these. One that wont break the bank would be helpful
also, is there some anount of "burn in" period on them That I should know about? Mine sound pretty forgettable even when at that 95% to get some volume out of them.

tbhariIt would depend on the specific tube amp. I previously owned a Fostex T50RP (the base unit that these headphones are crafted from) and I own a Schiit Audio Vali 2 tube amp. Even on the low-gain setting it was more than enough power, but switching it to the high-gain setting it sounded even better.

SupersportI am using a Lyr 2, switched to high gain and it is powering these just fine.

tbhariTransformer coupled tube amps will work, OTL amps will not as a general rule. the Garage 1217 stuff is good, the Vali and Lyr will work great, as well as most other non-OTL amps. Typically you will want an amp that have 1W of power with a high gain setting for the t50 drivers to sound their best.

SupersportSounds like you may just need more power out of your amp, anything with 1+ watt should do. The Magni, Vali or Bravo Ocean amps are all good inexpensive easy to recommend amps. Also make sure you have a source that outputs a full 2v to the amp.

tbhariDriving these phones on a Violectric HPA V281 sounds great; around 11 o'clock it gives enough power to make them really shine. Still burning them in though, they should even get better in time.

tbhariI'm using the Modi 2 -> Asgard 2, which powers it fine regardless of the setting of the high gain switch.
