I bought the duplex 2 years ago and it was already set up to add poles to make it freestanding.I went to the location they are made with 3 friends to look at them. The owner/founder of Zpacks showed us around(happy staff)all smiles, later he set the tent up in the parking lot on a grassy area. Two of us later ordered one.I have not one negative thing to say about the tent. The tent is palace for one....If I needed a 2 person I would look at the triplex, there would be more room for two that said the duplex works for two.I just like to spread out.The tent is dry as a bone and stands up great in wind. The owner told us 2 years ago at the time all the duplex tents would be already ready for the add on poles.I never found the need to make mine free standing as to me it defeats the weight savings purpose.I hike with hiking poles so it was a perfect fit for me .The set up is simple. If your on the fence check out Redbeard's reviews on utube. It is a big investment,I sold off a lot of excess gear I had to buy mine and gained back some closet space. ,
