Dear Massdrop users and hikers, I don't normally weigh in on these discussions, but I can't help it in this situation. Last year I hiked 1000 miles of the PCT, and from what I saw, Zpac tents are overrated.
First major issue is the difficulty in peging out and fully erecting the tent, this is made harder by the large amount of space needed for the guylines.
Second is the durablity of cubenfiber, so many toren and patched Zpak tents.
Third is the lack of versitility, once it is up there is no ability to remove a rain fly etc, and condensation was a constant issue for these tents.
Unless you only plan on hiking in ideal conditions, then give this on a skip. Free standing, durable, and less expensive tents for the win. Go Big Agnes

MrnotablesYeah, I'm a PNW backpacker and I see several issues with this one for sure. For one the ridge doesn't extend over the doors enough for my liking but then few tents do including BA, got 2 of em. Exped makes the Venus UL which is also fast pitch like a Hilleberg but lighter. Still not even close to the feather weight of this thing. Could also use a couple vents up high for when you have no option but to close both doors. All in all I'm really glad Z Packs is on here but more for the packs.

MrnotablesI'll never understand the obsession with .51oz cuben.
I have stuff sacks made of the stuff and they are already wearing down just from being opened and closed a few dozen times...
It is a fun material but the cost-to-benefit is dangerously high.

TeliosMany people have used the .51 oz cuben for 2000+ miles on this tent and not a single tear.

MrnotablesFrom what I've seen, it might be the user... on the AT people use this tent a lot and go the full 2200 miles without any major damage. Sure, a small tear can happen but it's easily reparable with CF tape. The Duplex can be made freestanding so if you know you are going to be camping in an area with tiny sites you can do that or use one of the smaller solplex. And again on the durability, I've seen it last well over 2000 miles with no damage.

Katelyn123Of course, it would be remiss not to mention the .51 blue cuben ZPacks tent that was absolutely shredded by pea sized hail. I think that was on the AT if I'm not mistaken, couple seasons ago. It made the rounds on social media and the best thing that can be said is that ZPacks got involved and took care of the owner but I never heard the actual outcome of that. Cuben is pay-to-play, no doubt about it, but it's a good material for the most part. The .51 and .35 should be selected with caution as to intended use because both will not last a long time with constant use and abrasion....tons of stuff sacks from various companies just come apart after awhile. For a shelter the .74 makes the most sense by far. It'd be nice if the camo was available in that weight.

StepbystepAlso the minor issue with extended use of water being trapped between the mylar layers...a good case for rolling up the shelter for packing rather than stuffing. I don't think water ingress was a problem for the few people that have shared the same experience with this, but until they could dry out their shelters they were packing them away wet and carrying a little extra weight in trapped water. Pay to play.
