For avid backpackers and thru-hikers seeking a lightweight, waterproof shelter, the Zpacks Duplex is hard to beat. It's made from Dyneema Composite Fabric: a water-resistant material that's built to stand up to storms and strong winds. There are two doors for ventilation, two vestibules for gear storage, a 48-inch-high ceiling, and enough room for you and your camping buddy to sleep, sit up, and exit easily. Along with all-side weather protection, you’ll get great views of surrounding nature with the vestibules rolled up. Since the Duplex weighs only 19 ounces packed, you won't have to leave any parts behind to save weight.
Note: This drop’s base price is for the Zpacks Duplex with 0.51 oz/sq yd fabric in your choice of colors: blue or olive (pictured). At checkout, you can opt for the 0.74 oz/sq yd fabric in spruce (+ $15) or the 0.67 oz/sq yd fabric in camo (+ $30).
The 0.51 oz/sq yd Dyneema Composite Fabric has a high tensile strength and can handle strong winds, storms, and all the typical conditions a tent will be in during long-distance hikes. The 0.67 oz/sq yd fabric has the same Dyneema thread count as the standard fabric, but with a slightly thicker laminate and a camo pattern that bring the overall tent weight up 1 ounce. The camo pattern blends into nature well, and is darker and less transparent to offer more privacy. Finally, the 0.74 oz/sq yd fabric has a higher Dyneema thread count, which gives it a higher tear strength at a 1.8 ounces.
Inherently waterproof, Dyneema Composite Fabric has a very high strength-to-weight ratio and doesn’t absorb any significant amount of water—so you won’t have to carry extra weight if it rains. Because the material is made from Dyneema threads, the tent stays taut all night and won’t stretch or sag if it gets wet. The seams are stitched and then taped watertight, and the tie-outs have bonded reinforcements for high strength (no seam sealing necessary). Finally, tape sticks well to Dyneema Composite Fabric, so any damage can be patched in the field. On the Duplex, the floor material is more than twice as thick as the canopy material, making it more resistant to punctures and abrasion.
