I have a nice little write up on the Zpacks Nero, for anybody interested in learning more about what this backpack is, and is not, along with a walk-around video of the pack showing the features and me explaining some things about it.

I am happy to try to answer any questions anybody might have about the Nero.

abelaHave you had a chance to use it in the field yet? If so, what total weight and how did it carry? Thanks!

idoc72I used mine very little. It is significantly more pack volume than what I tend to need/use. I am usually in the 18-22 liter volume for all of my gear, and thus my vests/packs tend to be smaller than what the Nero is. I ended up sending my Nero to a hiker in the UK. It really just came down to the Nero being 2x larger volume than my typical setup is and thus resulted in very little usage. If this had been around 4 or so years ago when I was in the 30-40 liter volume pack size, I am pretty sure I would have loved and used the crap out of the Nero! All that said, the one time that I did load up up with a bunch of gear, somewhere around 32 liters worth, it carried it very well - even at that higher volume, it was still sub 2268 grams of weight, so not really all that much of a TPW. I simply cannot speak to the max load weight of 20 pounds of gear that Zpacks states. But like with any non-framed backpack, 10-12 pounds is probably the max load I would want to throw at it. All in all, the market for this volume of packs is not all that big, especially within the cottage industry. You have this Zpacks Nero at 38 liters, the MLD Burn also at 38 liters, the SMD Flight 30/40 (more running vest), the ZimmerBuilt QuickStep, and the newer stuff from palantepacks and appalachianultralight. Any one of these, or rather all of these, are going to be pretty much the same. Same basic minimalist features, all about the same weight, some more expensive than others, all the normal things. If you already have any one of them, very little reason to buy any of the other of them. If you do not have any one of them and need something in the 30-40L pack range, toss a coin, any one of them should serve you well.
