Danny, John Abela, or Zpacks - how do the Azure Blue and Gray fabrics compare? Is one a little thicker, tougher, or more durable than the other; and if possible to get an opinion, is the Gray a “clean” gray, somewhat similar to the “black” Cuben (e.g. as used in Locus Gear mids), rather than a “dirty” gray ((faint yellow/brown discoloration)? (Not to be confused with the jet black color of the real black Cuben/DCF).

rmeurantSorry, I did not see this until just now and I did not get properly tagged, so I did not get a notice. (btw, just an fyi: Danny no longer works at Massdrop, and I never have) I have never seen the Zpacks grey CF so I cannot speak to it, but I have had both the blue and the green. I did a fun little video showing the two. In regards to 'durability', all of the colors should be identical. These are not like the "camo" where it has a slightly heavier/durabable fabric over the 0.51 used on their shelters (it is the 0.51+camo layer).

Massdrop. Switch out the pictured heavy water bottle for a plastic generic one, that might better appeal to the UL crowd.

I got one when they 1st came out on the market. Total package is 38 liters but the main pocket is only 25 liters. The 25 is plenty for a ultralight load. I like to keep my wet tarp in the front pocket. My base weight ( including the pack ) is between 7 and 8 pounds and there is plenty of room in the pack for consumables. I added the hip belt pockets and the shoulder strap pockets. They are for easy to get to snacks and toiletries plus some bear spry. The bear spry is for critters and even a Bear if one shows up. It also can be for the two legged variety if it's needed.

You might want to price this out on the Zpacks web site. After shipping and tax, this Drop would save me only about $4.00.

Yeah, for me, living in California, getting nailed with tax, so for me to buy from MD it is $192.09 and to buy direct it is $199.00 if I select their free shipping. $6.91 difference

abelaI'm in California too, so that $175 deal doesn't turn out to be so great after all.

Why is this listed in apparel and not ultralight?

I have a nice little write up on the Zpacks Nero, for anybody interested in learning more about what this backpack is, and is not, along with a walk-around video of the pack showing the features and me explaining some things about it.

I am happy to try to answer any questions anybody might have about the Nero.

abelaHave you had a chance to use it in the field yet? If so, what total weight and how did it carry? Thanks!

idoc72I used mine very little. It is significantly more pack volume than what I tend to need/use. I am usually in the 18-22 liter volume for all of my gear, and thus my vests/packs tend to be smaller than what the Nero is. I ended up sending my Nero to a hiker in the UK. It really just came down to the Nero being 2x larger volume than my typical setup is and thus resulted in very little usage. If this had been around 4 or so years ago when I was in the 30-40 liter volume pack size, I am pretty sure I would have loved and used the crap out of the Nero! All that said, the one time that I did load up up with a bunch of gear, somewhere around 32 liters worth, it carried it very well - even at that higher volume, it was still sub 2268 grams of weight, so not really all that much of a TPW. I simply cannot speak to the max load weight of 20 pounds of gear that Zpacks states. But like with any non-framed backpack, 10-12 pounds is probably the max load I would want to throw at it. All in all, the market for this volume of packs is not all that big, especially within the cottage industry. You have this Zpacks Nero at 38 liters, the MLD Burn also at 38 liters, the SMD Flight 30/40 (more running vest), the ZimmerBuilt QuickStep, and the newer stuff from palantepacks and appalachianultralight. Any one of these, or rather all of these, are going to be pretty much the same. Same basic minimalist features, all about the same weight, some more expensive than others, all the normal things. If you already have any one of them, very little reason to buy any of the other of them. If you do not have any one of them and need something in the 30-40L pack range, toss a coin, any one of them should serve you well.

Do gram weenies really carry metal water tanks, or is that accessory merely intended for illustration?

This thing is a monster, crushes my HMG Southwest, but you really need to have the compatible gear. This might be the ticket for short overnight trips when using a tarp. Gonna pull the trigger if this gets to the lowest price

SunCityJonI have to wonder how the fit would be. The last pack that I bought I got at REI and was sized for me and fits great. I'm not extra small but my spine is apparently and if this thing would really fit it would be great.

JudysIt does have an adjustable torso, so you might be ok. From zpacks: " three belt positions allow you to move the webbing belt up or down to fit a range of torso heights. " Also, they sell this for $199, so it looks like a nice deal. My base weight is nowhere near what it takes to work for this pack, so hopefully Danny will work on the Arc Blast drop ;)
