Sure, there are purposely built DACs that don't have a built-in speaker amp but have volume-controlled line-level outputs if that is what you're asking. IMO, since lotsa folks will use a laptop as their music source, people should pause and get clear about whether desktop units fit their usage patterns... and if they do, are they really worth their typically much higher cost...
