I have been buying Koss PortaPro phones since they were first released in 1984. I've been through many dozens of pairs over the years, as I've jogged with them and put them through heavy use.
In my opinion, they are the best lightweight, walkman-style portable headphone available.

First, they're headphones, not head-sets. A DAC is a Digital Audio Converter or Digital to Analog Converter (however you want it). It takes a signal from your computer, turns it into something a speaker (or headphone driver) can understand and it makes the coil (or foil [planar]) move. An amplifier, amplifies the signal. Wow...thank you for the reply! I have loved the 1st Gen Sennheiser Momentum over-ear/around ear since I bought them years ago. They are just an all around great headphone for movies, music, travel, and surprisingly good at isolation. But the musicality and sound right out of the box really blew me away. I do wish I could hear the latest HD1 before responding but here's what I would love to have after enjoying the original the last few years!

While the V-Moda M-100 sounds good, if you want something comfortable for extended wear I would avoid it. When I joined massdrop, there was a VARIETY of items to buy at group discounts. It was fun! Now every other headphone drop is the m50x. And for the price or a little bit more, you can get a better headphone that doesn't need an amp, that works well as a day to day headphone! I still have and love my original sennheiser momentums.
