Sorry if this is somewhat off topic, but what's your preferred method of sharpening knives?

maxbernsteinI use the Spyderco SharpMaker, finishing with the ultra fine stones. I then use the KnivesPlus strop-block finising it off to a razor sharp, mirrored edge.

maxbernsteinThat's what this thread is for. Ask any question regarding knives, make statements, voice concerns, post pictures, anything knife related

maxbernsteinI use multiple methods. I have wet stones, diamond and ceramic hones. I have a lansky guided sharpening system. I want to get an Edge apex pro or at least try one.

Gunnersmate2I'd recommend checking out some synthetic sapphire stones for polishing off an edge, they work wonders for that finishing touch.

maxbernsteinI heard that from someone else. He said he uses synthetic sapphire stones for a "jeweled" finish.

Gunnersmate2I can't say I know much about that, but my method is to add a micro bevel at 30 degrees with the sapphire after a normal 20 degree with less fine grit stones. This way you can still shave arm hair without compromising the cutting edge in terms of durability, strength, and longevity. I hope this made some sense.

maxbernsteinMakes perfect sense to me. Every knife I've added a micro bevel like you described has retained its edge for significantly longer. It's hard for me to do it freehand with bench stones. To be honest I've only been able to do it with a guided sharpening system.

DougFLA123If it's not too much hassle I'd love to see some pictures of your collection. Depending on my work schedule I'll be posting pictures soon.

Gunnersmate2Its almost embarrassing how many knives I own. I just bought two more of these Spyderco 30 pocket storage cases (SP-1).

Gunnersmate2The Spyderco large carry case is $35.97 on Amazon, BladeHQ, KnifeCenter, etc. On Amazon you pay tax but get free shipping. On the knife websites there’s no tax but you pay for shipping unless your order is over $95 to $99. I bought them on Amazon.

DougFLA123So I just got my ZT knives and know I know why my friend loves them so much. WOW!! These have some smooth actions, perfect detents and blade centering. These are some of the best made production knives for the price. I can't get over how buttery smooth these knives are out of the box. I got the 0801 with Elmax steel and the 0456 with 20CV steel.

Gunnersmate2They are excellent and beautiful knives, especially that ZT0456, which is one of my favorite ZT’s. When you flick it open, it goes thunk, with authority! It just sounds so solid...and it just falls shut when you want to close it. Congratulations! Really great knives! Another one you would like I think is the ZT0562CF, Carbon Fiber, CPM-20CV steel, Hinderer design...really nice! The other day you asked if I’d put pictures of my collection up here...what I think I’ll do, is post a picture of my favorite ZT’s, and a picture of my favorite Benchmade’s, my favorite Spyderco’s, etc. That might be kind of cool.

DougFLA123Ya that sounds awesome and I'll check out that ZT. I really like the 0456 too. Its weight to me is great and it fits my hand so well. The actions on both are crazy smooth and your right about how the 0456 sounds when it locks open. There is no mistaking the lockup on it. It is smooth closing also, it just glides closed. I understand why my friend collects ZT knives now.

Gunnersmate2You'd be hard pressed to find knives as great as ZT straight out of the box, and for the price, they're a total steal. I picked up the 0566BW after my cousin recommended it. He's currently in serving in the middle east, and he says he uses it on the daily and it hasn't let him down. I decided to go with Elmax steel and so far it's perfect. It doesn't print in my pocket, and the construction is near flawless. The assisted opening is just icing on the cake, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if it went missing, and if something goes wrong, customer service is outstanding. Gotta love ZT.
Between the Kershaw Launch 3 &4, the 0556BW is my go-to EDC.
