Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. Edit: The seller actually just confirmed that it is a Teensy. What I did with the dfu tools is then irrelevant. On a different computer (windows 10) the default configuration is working again but I still do not manage to load anything on the board.
Windows 8
I bought this Ergodox from Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ErgoDox-Ergonomic-Mechanical-Keyboard-Cherry-MX-Blue-Fully-Assembled-NOT-Kit/182395182981?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D40806%26meid%3De281706be3e34d0e93bec8cba4891f42%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D182401231837).
First I tried to flash it using Teensy. I downloaded from the massdrop configurator the default configuration. I loaded the .hex file to the Teensy loader, and activated "Auto" mode.
Second I downloaded the dfu tools (https://s3.amazonaws.com/configurator-assets/kii-dfu_win-0.2e.zip) kii-dfu and dfu-util (v0.8). Pressing "List Devices" and "Flash" in kii-dfu give:
Then I started the Zadig tool (http://zadig.akeo.ie/) (v2.2), options->List all devices and in the list I get 3 items I expected plus "Ergodox ergonomic keyboard", but there is no " Kiibohd DFU Bootloader " as indicated here (https://github.com/kiibohd/controller/wiki/Loading-DFU-Firmware#windows).
Since then the keyboard does not respond any more, except I see the 3 RGB LED turning on when I plug it in. I do not know what to try next.
