To be honest there's not a whole lot of commonality between the two groups. Beyond spatulas/mixing spoons/bowls. While it's true that there is some overlap in the people doing both, as it's been mentioned if you can bake you can probably cook, but not necessarily the other way around.
The way I see it adding a sub-category lets them start to fit in more specialized equipment into the baking section, that would simply be a waste of airwaves in the cooking section and thus risk not being dropped to begin with.
So far, they admittedly haven't done a great job of that, there's far too much overlap between the two categories. Many drops have literally been double dropped which is lending itself to people questioning why you need two sections when they drop everything in both.

NaftoorWell perhaps you're right because I hate flipping through all the watch drops that insist on grouping automatics with quartz movements! Then there's that damn group of photographers who insist on shooting in color when everyone knows shooting black and white is so much trendier! And don't get me started with those knuckle-dragging, rollerball-users who refuse to admit fountain pens are the only civilized way to write!!!
I say round up all those malcontented dissidents and cart them off to their own website where the can be amongst their own kind!
That way the rest of us won't be inconvenienced by incessant drops that have nothing what so ever to do with our interests! As a matter of fact, I say we should build a big wall to keep them the hell out of our website!
Build that wall, build that wall!!!

RayFI couldn't agree more!
It gets me so hot under the collar when I'm perusing blades and run into fixed blades amongst my folders, or even worse chef's knives.
The real question is how far can they segment stuff before the categories become small enough to become useless? Cooking and baking should be fine as they are still very general categories, but b&w vs color photography, or fixed blades vs folding is likely getting too far into the weeds, sadly. As such I'll have to continue to deal with the plebeians who actually purchase knives as tools instead of pocket decorations and edged 180 degree spin capable fidget spinners.
At the end of the day though, we come to MD to pursue our interests, which pretty specifically means not dealing with drops that aren't in our field of interest.

NaftoorI agree there is going to always be some overlap between the two communities. we always joke that chefs are ADD and pastry chefs are OCD.
