If you want a higher quality cable, build it. It won't sound any better, but it will only cost you less than $10 for a sturdy cable if you already have a soldering iron, solder, and soldering wire clamp. The startup cost isn't that expensive (depending on the soldering iron) and you could make your money back by selling them to unknowing friends for $60 and they would have no idea you were ripping them off (like high-end cable companies do anyways). I built a cable for my headphones which was fun and its very sturdy and can be fixed easily.

AeabottsDIY is a stupidly slippery slope though, and costs can escalate very quickly. You start off with basic supplies, then you decide to try some nicer wire, oh wait maybe some more colours, then you're doing 6 or 8 wire braids and using up even more wire, maybe try a fancier connector, a nicer soldering station sure is nice, along with a table vice, some helping hand tools, magnifying lamp, even more wire... oh hey let's try building an amp now. Better order some spare parts just in case. Then I'll learn some circuit design and start etching some of my own boards. Better stock up on random components, those are cheap enough. Well, I guess having a spare transformer or two wouldn't hurt if I'm building power supplies now. Oh look there's an oscilloscope on ebay...
I debatably have more invested in diy supplies randomly lying about than I do in my headphone rig. The stupid thing is, I was diagnosing a friend's blown amp the other day but couldn't fix it because I didn't have the right value capacitors. So I *could* order a few, but high shipping costs don't make sense if I'm only ordering $3 worth of parts. Guess I should order more to make it worthwhile...

ArmaegisThere's definitely that, so maybe they should put a "DIY Responsibly" warning label from the Surgeon General on all DIY parts lol. But I love the idea of making my own upgrades and saving money while doing it (if I'm smart). I do want to make my own amp at some point but with college I really don't have much money to spare for things I don't really need since my fiio puts out enough power anyways. But I think DIY is a very good thing, though it can definitely be addicting.

ArmaegisHaha, yeah, DIY may not be the best approach if the motivation is purely to save money. It's more of a hobby.

j-techI agree with the hobby idea. It's a lot of fun and saving money is just a bonus if you're careful, which I try to be though it hadn't worked out everytime.

AeabottsHold on, you mean that the $1000 1 metre Diamond HDMI cable I just bought isn't going to upgrade my display to 4k?
