It was amazing when I first listened to it. Indeed, I had to take off my headphones to make sure the sound was not from my cell phone speakers. However, I think the wow effect also wears off. I think now I still prefers my other amp/dac's. I would put Creative's own SBX G6 above SXFi. To really enjoy music, I still use the SONY TA-ZH1ES with balanced output. SXFi Amp is good for mobile phones on the go, especially when most mobiles phones lack a headphone jack. I will need some sort of dongle anyway. Also, nobody has really mentioned this fact: it supports a microphone too, which makes it a really nice companion for mobile phones.
basisunusWhat about when you connect an amp (such as your Sony) to the headphone output on the SXFi?

EvshrugThat will be headphone out to line in. I need to check the impedance, although it probably will be ok. Usually, you want to connect line out, such as from a DAC.
basisunusThanks for taking the time to read my reply, and Yes, SXFi Headphone out to TA-ZH1ES line in. Since there’s no line out on the SXFi anyway, you could turn the SXFi volume down if you experienced clipping issues. Also, Input impedance on normally-designed amps is measured in the thousands of Ω to make a nearly-ideal voltage mode circuit for the outputting amp or DAC (SXFi in this case)... so basically, I wouldn’t worry about the impedance. The Sony amp would be a much “easier” load on the SXFi than any headphone. I’m just asking, if you connect the SXFi (headphone out) and the G6 (line out) to your superior amp (Sony, via line-in), so that your testing headphone is driven well regardless, do you still feel the G6 has the advantage in surround processing (and tonality)?

EvshrugI did a brief test. Overall, I feel adding the Sony to both makes them sound worse, in different ways maybe. The SXFi becomes harsh, while the G6 adds a constant noise. Disregarding the noise, the G6 has a more intimate sound, which is closer to just using the Sony. I feel the surround effect is somewhat gone for the SXFi. But there are many factors that can change the outcome. Here, I'm using JRiver on a Windows computer. I set to enable surround sound for SXFi and G6 in the system sound settings. In JRiver could switch among WASAPI, ASIO, or DirectSound. I'm using a pair of Audeze Sines for the listening.
basisunusWith... music? sorry to hear you didn’t like the sound

EvshrugIt might be the headphone profiles, as there is not one for the Audeze. I might have set it to the generic IEM. I usually use the SXFi with my phone and a pair of Sony IEMs. For the comparison, it happened that I have a pair of Sines at hand. Anyways, it turns out that I actually have been using the SXFi the most because of its convenience. My current setup for critical listening is the Sony Amp and a pair of Audeze MX4s. It could be that I already assume the sound from this combination is the "ground truth".
