I don't own these speakers, so the below comments are just opinions:
I don't think these little baby bookshelves are going to get you anything spectacular in terms of sound quality. I think the reason why they are popular because of the marketing and pricing strategy goes after people who want into high end audio at the price of a decent TV.
With all due respect GUTB, I encourage you to do some research of your own rather than make sweeping statements about one of the most highly rewarded and critically acclaimed speaker in quite some time. Please understand this is not meant to bash your opinion, disrespect your thought process (as I know I too have thought at times that marketing and pricing was the only reason a product succeeded ) or de-legitimize any of your knowledge of speakers in general. This serves to inform you that you are simply, how do I put this, wrong.
They are most likely larger than you think, and size has literally nothing to do with the sound quality most times. For instance, look at a $100 12" subwoofer from a budget brand. If you think that that will outperform a $600 10" subwoofer from SVS, you again are unfortunately mistaken. The 12" will likely be muddy, inaccurate, and completely drop off at a fairly high Hz, or just sound terrible trying to hit them if it is even able to.
Below are a few links to get you started on potentially wanting to revise your statement, as well as allowing you to understand just how special these speakers are to quite a few people:
Now if what you say is true, I highly doubt that all of the most read and respected audio websites, magazines, blogs, reviewers, etc. would all be part of a simple "marketing strategy". As stated in the beginning of my response, I respect your opinion, but encourage you to inform yourself before you make it public.
Having said all that, I still stand by my opinion that this should be offered in a drop and would be very beneficial to all members of the audiophile community!
If you need more background to our rather opinionated and often ill-informed friend feel free to check his status on sites like head-fi, SBAF and reddit/r/headphones... he's got nowhere left to post but here :)
GUTB-----I have owned and listened to these speakers for two years. There are many excellent speakers at this price point, so there is stiff competition, however LS-50's are excellent speakers, from my listening experienc. Borrow a pair, and compare them to any speakers you wish. Then, you can let us know what you found. I hope you wouldn't write a car review without driving the car.....
