In Men's Style there have been calls for a "Made in USA" community. To be less defensive, maybe an "ethically made" or "not outsourced" community. Generally it would be clothes made in North America/Europe/Japan/Oz. But maybe also things like high-end artisan keycaps--even if it's made in Vietnam, an $80 space bar is in the same category as $300 jeans.

I find that idea to be a bit of a slippery slope to start subdividing communities by nationality. Maybe have a catch-all "artisan" community that support craftsmen and artists around the world might be better? Only small individual or family run companies, perhaps?

C.M.GThe original idea for the community was to support manufacturing in countries with decent wages and solid regulatory protection for workers and the environment--to fight against the "race to the bottom." So it would wouldn't necessarily always mean buying from small-time artisans. It could also mean buying from large companies if they don't outsource to wherever will cut the most corners to deliver cheap goods. I'd love to have MD communities for style etc. from artisans, but this is a different idea.

The best way I've found to slow down or stop the "race to the bottom", is just to support the bottom directly. Removing the middleman and the large power brokers makes sure those who do work get paid. It's not a bad idea either way you go, so I hope MD can do more to help.

C.M.GSupporting individual small-scale craftsmen is definitely a worthy goal, and I'm all for MD making it easier to do that. But other products just need a bigger operation. On MD I've found dress shirts made in New England, boots made in Wisconsin, hiking socks made in North Carolina, backpacks made in Colorado, sweaters made in eastern Japan. (Not to mention the computer keyboard made in Tennessee and keycaps made in Germany). None of those things can be made in large enough quantities for a mass buy without some kind of factory, so they're not really artisanal products, but we still want the factory to be someplace where they can't get away with dumping their waste chemicals into the rivers etc.
