i have one, errr, more than one. i use separate because phones sound crap, have crap battery life and because phones dont have hardware controls. i want to control volume and track from inside my pocket for which touch screens are utterly useless and battery draining.

mark2410Actually every smartphone I've seen so far had volume buttons :) and they can be used to switch tracks (by long pressing), although this often requires root.

pauliunasive not tried longpressing the volumes button directly on phones (just mic'd and buttoned cables) but that still doesnt solve them having tiny battery lives and sounding rubbish. though granted both should be curable if makers wanted to.

mark2410Yup. If compact DAPs can do that, I have no doubt a 5.5" phone can do it too. By the way, my HTC Sensation was OK for almost a full day of listening, and that's a quite old phone. So it's definitely possible, but unfortunately, nowadays the goal of manufacturers is not to make good phones but to milk as much money as possible from customers. I do agree that having a DAP is a hundred times better than listening out of a phone.

pauliunasfunny you mention the sensation, i once reviewed the sensation XE, you know the "beats" one. my sister still uses it as her DAP (seperate form her phone for mostly battery reasons)
still the key is, that once apple realise they could stop using Wolfson DAC's in the ipod line whin they moved to the ipod "classic" and slapped in a super cheap cirrus logic was when they realised that most people didnt care or couldnt tell the difference. i mean if your using ibuds even the most crappy DAC and amp isnt likely to be the limiting factor.
however LG's recient G5 DAC module did give me hope but LG are cealrly just using it as a marketing thing, i mean why else go wild about B&O branding and yet give out zero specs on the thing?

doug-jensenspecificaly i know the 5G ones do, i think some earlier ones may have also but for capacity reasons it really is the 5G and the so called 5.5G ones. its the one just before they started calling that line the Ipod Classic
