I have been playing Magic for around 6 years now, but have never been to a large event. What should I be aware of, and what should I be prepared for when attending one?
DragoorRemember that you're going there to have fun, so don't let any losses weigh on you! DON'T BE AFRAID TO CALL A JUDGE. It's the right thing to do. You won't be seen as a "rules lawyer." They are there to help! If you're not sure on something, CALL A JUDGE. Check out ahead of time what eating options are nearby since there won't be a lunch break (though there is one at the Pro Tour if you make it there!). Bring: snacks, paper/pen, dice, playmat (optional), portable charger for phone, headphones if you want to relax between rounds. Don't use your phone once you've sat down with your opponent. Only use outside notes (like sideboard guide) in between games. Totally fine to take notes DURING the game, such as what is in opponent's hand if you used a discard spell. They typically announce it during the event, but: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RANDOMLY DETERMINE THE MATCH WINNER IN ANY SCENARIO. No dice rolling, no flipped off cards from the top of the deck if time ran out. If for some reason you are thinking of do a prize split, TALK TO A JUDGE AWAY FROM THE TABLE. Tell them what you want to do and they will try to walk you through it. If you don't feel comfortable with the risk of a bribery/collusion disqualification, just play Magic and don't worry about a split! (Though if you talked through things with a judge and followed directions, there shouldn't be risk). Every round I take a walk after I finish, hit up bathroom, drink some water, try to get fresh air / sunlight, snack if I'm hungry and far enough from meal time. Only have the cards from your deck in your deckbox. Bring an extra box to hold random extras.
