automatic alarm watch?

more_vert
is there such a thing as a mechanical watch with an alarm? I've used a Casio my entire life, and yet I now find that I need to "grow up and get a big boy watch." of all the minimal features on it, the only one I could never give up is the alarm, and I am in search of a modern dress watch that has one -preferably for under 1.000. does such a thing exist?

The Russian manufacturer Poljot had an affordable alarm movement. Sadly, they were disbanded in the 2000s and their successor bankrupted in 2011. But there are still NOS watches being sold, or watches with recased Poljot alarm movements, being sold. Check out poljot24.de -- they have a page of Russian-based alarm watches for sale. I particularly like the Traveler, which looks a little like a Sinn. Or, you can find used or vintage watches with that movement being sold on eBay in the low $100s.

PerdendosiPoljot is still around, strangely enough. I bought a Poljot Aviator 24 hour earlier this year, and it was beautiful to look at, but broke in 2 days. The replacement lasted a week. I ultimately had to ask for a refund, and my collection still lacks a 24 hour watch.

Would you consider fitness bands’ silent alarm feature? It vibrates around your wrist and the vibration very effectively wakes you up. On the other hand it’s silent and if you have a partner, they won’t be hearing it and won’t be bothered by it. I have been using mechanical watches forever and used to utilize my phone as an alarm clock but since I got a fitness band a few years back, I’m totally hooked on the silent alarm feature of it. I actually find it a more gentle wake up than an alarm clock. I go with the fitness bands that don’t have a display and are very slim and wear them either next to my watch or on the opposite hand. A good one is the Fitbit flex 2, which is under $60.

I enjoy this category of watch and have owned a 1960's Seiko Bellmatic. You mentioned 'modern' and I'll admit that vintage mechanical alarms are more novelty than tool. My quick suggestion is to avoid analog quartz alarms, because they often seem like an afterthought feature. Perhaps the best replacement for a Casio is another Casio. This time, in steel! There are a few analog quartz watches under $1k that set via the dial like a mechanical watch, but have alarms that 'beep' instead of a metal on metal resonance. See @kpjimmy 's comment about the Dan Henry watch above. Most of the quartz alarms I've seen are complicated-looking Seiko/Citizen chronographs. My most recent favorite is the Citizen Tsuno Eco-drive Chronograph (Bullhead style). It has a cool quartz powered movement, but mechanically actuated chronograph (sometimes called mecha-quartz). https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/citizen-tsuno-eco-drive-chronograph-racer-introducing Which makes me wonder @StainlessOnly ...could there be a mecha-quartz mechanical alarm? Minute repeater? Is there one already?

Graf Zeppelin makes a nice quartz with an alarm, model 7680-1, but I'll admit, I can't hear it. I can't hear whistles on athletic fields, either, so keep that in mind -- my high-pitched hearing has been worn out by heavy rock music, I guess. :-) This watch is available from a number of sellers online, and the factory strap is actually really nice, I wore mine out and put this Perlon on it: https://www.google.com/search?biw=1775&bih=927&tbm=shop&ei=JAj-W8XuOKqZ0gKe16_IBA&q=zeppelin+7680-1&oq=zeppelin+7680-1

The Dan Henry 1972 is a quartz but it's as close you can get without breaking the bank. https://danhenrywatches.com/collections/vintage-watches/products/1972-chrono-alarm
