What does it take to start a keycap drop?

more_vert
Greetings!
I am still fairly new to the mech keys community but have recently discovered the awesome rabbit hole that is end-game keyboarding.
My question is...with as much demand as has been expressed in some of the keycap polls, why aren't there more keycap drops? What prevents MD or anyone from doing those runs? Is it logistics or capital? Maybe the answer is obvious; in the end I would love to see more keycap drops show up.
Cheers and keep clacking.

Massdrop isn't the only site that organizes group buys with GMK and Signature Plastics though, and as it stands SP's queue for SA profile keycaps is now backed up into early 2018 from what I've heard. So if they did multiple drops per month (on Massdrop alone) chances are that backlog would get so bad that you wouldn't see your caps for a few years after you ordered them. Heck, I'm still waiting on my Amazing Chocolatier set that I ordered back in August of 2016.
That's not even factoring in all the work that goes on behind the scenes with the people who are designing the caps either. There's interest checks to run, colors to decide on, negotiations between sites like Massdrop and vendors like SP or GMK, etc. Basically designing a set and organizing a group buy for it are a huge undertaking, which is part of the reason you don't see custom sets as often as the more run-of-the-mill caps from other companies on here.

I'd have to agree on that one with you, where massdrop isn't supplying as much as the consumers want, but it's because that these are mainly made as group buys. So then basically they'd have to contact the company that produces the keycaps and make an order. From my knowledge they bring back the some keycap drops after the previous ones have shipped out (which you'll find on the drop page of an item). But i'd like to learn more about how they choose which product to choose as a drop.
