Great, realistic advice. It's hiking, not hauling. With just a bit of research and experimentation there is no need to have a bone crushing load anymore. Gear has come such a long way in the last twenty years. I am excited to see where it goes. Geez, my complete kitchen weighs less today than my first stove. And ultralight gear gets a bad rap for being expensive. Not true. Sure you can spend a lot on some things made from exotic materials. But they aren't really necessary to get to a comfortable weight. Take care of your stuff and it will last many, many trips, miles.

JerkyKenWhy go ultralight? So my adventures can include my entire family. For example, we (ages 41, 41, 8 and 5) recently finished a trek from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Point Reyes Lighthouse. Without the ultralight mindset it would not have been possible (or not as pleasant).

clbowden@clbowden That sounds like an awesome stretch of coast to trek along! Mind if I ask how long it took and what you're experience was like?

It was about 50 miles over 8 days broken down as follows:
Day 1: Golden Gate Bridge to Marin Headlands Hostel Day 2: Hostel to Pelican Inn at Muir Beach Day 3: Muir Beach to Bolinas Day 4: Bolinas to Palomarin Trailhead Day 5: Palomarin Trailhead to Wildcat Campground Day 6: Wildcat to Limantour Beach Day 7: Limantour Beach to Drakes Beach Day 8: Drakes Beach to Point Reyes Lighthouse
Since the kid were still in school we did the segments in order from April to June of this year. Days 1-2-3 and 5-6 were overnight trips while the rest were day trips. A packraft was required on days 3 and 7.

clbowdenVery cool trip - I have hiked (more in the Point Reyes area) a few times but didn't even consider that a track like that was right there...thanks for sharing.
