LogosHow were the conditions on Baker @Logos? I'll be up at Shasta this weekend and I've heard that the conditions this year are quite good, and now particularly the snow is in great shape.

DannyMilksThe conditions were great, really solid snowpack. It was a bit hot though and we were close to a couple of ice avalanches. Good luck on Shasta! What route are you taking?

LogosWe're climbing the West Face, which is my favorite route. We hike into Hidden Valley on day 1, wake up early and climb day 2, then get back to camp that afternoon/evening and have a really wonderful camping experience. Hike out after a leisurely breakfast on day 3. The West Face *can* be done in 2 days, but it wouldn't be fun. Avy gulch is a little easier to do in 2 days. The West Face is a little steeper, tends to have better snow and no rockfall danger, and you get cool views of Shastina and Muir Glacier. The downside, besides being steeper, is that most of the climb is on one continuous face, which can get monotonous. Avy Gulch and the North Face have different geological features that give you a change in scenery and natural break points.
To me, the best part of most mountaineering trips is after the climb. Before the climb you're nervous or tired or giddy with anticipation. During the climb you're trying to minimize suffering (dehydration, altitude, sun exposure, etc). After the climb, you get to relax and talk with your team. On a 2-day trip, or Avy Gulch if you summit on day 3, you climb then return all the way to your car and get back down to town - and suddenly you've so far removed from the wilderness that it's just not the same. I really like having dinner on the mountain after the climb and talking about our day, relaxing, getting to know my team better. And sunset from Hidden Valley is fantastic.
