Although it's only 9334', fewer than 25 people per year get to the top of Mokelumne Peak according to my count in the registers the two times I've been there. One of those registers, 8 years ago, was an official USGS register, but that's gone now and has been replaced by someone's homemade PVC and plastic bag register with a couple of spiral bound notebooks in it. Reading through it, like any register is always interesting. Had a shot of 12yr old The Balvenie Doublewood scotch at the top with my son a couple of weeks ago. That's him with Round Top (near Carson Pass on Hiway 88 - been there) under his arm... I'm facing north, he's facing south. Just beyond his finger tip is Deadwood Peak (been there) and on the other side of him are Covered Wagon Peak (or is that Thimble Peak with Covered Wagon behind him? Been to both - Kirkwood Ski Resort is on the other side of it) with Thunder Mountain (yup, been there, too) to the far right. Although Round Top is a full 1k' higher, being so near the pass on highway 88, over 25 people a weekend from the late spring through early fall get to the top of it. In the winter, there are quite a few that will actually climb it to ski it and quite a few of my friends have.

The second pic is facing south (well, I'm facing south, he's facing north) and directly behind him (sorry) is Mt Reba. Under his arm you can see some of the cleared ski runs at Bear Valley Ski Resort on Highway 4.

The climb's not terrible as it's not really so much a climb...mostly...as it is a stumble up and over large, jagged, sometimes loose rock, but the approach is a long one from any direction. We took our time and made a two-nighter out of it with the first day an 8 mile backpack to a pretty little lake (at 8000' elevation)north of the mountain with a day hike of about 8-10 miles round trip to the peak and back on day two. What a great trip that was!

KitCarson61@KitCarson61 - thanks for sharing the pics! I've one of the 'masses' who has been to the top of Round Top but few of the other mountains nearby. In fact, Round Top was the first mountain I summited when I moved to California for college. It was quite impressive for an kid coming from the east coast. I have backcountry skied in the area though, and frequently found the snow too wind-affected to be much fun. But Kirkwood is just down the road :)
