Needless Non-standard Key Sizes

more_vert
What is it with manufacturers and their needless non-standard key sizes? Do they not see nor care that they make our jobs a lot more difficult in replacing their crap keys? In most cases, with a little bit of an air gap or a small adjustment, they could make our customization as their customers a lot easier.
The reason behind this rant is that I found a mass produced keyboard that I want for 75% by Vortex.

But look at that ESC key?!? Why? Where do I find a keycap for this? Thankfully, the board is fully programmable (well, as much as Vortex boards are). But still, it seems that with a bit of a change, i.e. 1U ESC, F-keys in line with numeric keys, and delete key 1U and add one more 1U key, you'd have a more compatible layout, with an extra key, to boot.
Why do they do this to us!

That board was my very first mech. But, thanks in part to the manufacturer's decision to go for that wide ESC key I now have...a couple more boards :) The one I'm happiest with is not any of the fancier either - it's a KBDfans 67III with PC plate that I've tape-modded, added sound dampening rubber to the bottom to and holee modded V2 stabs. Keys are (currently) an MT3 set - love the acoustics and switches are Durock Piano's (never see anybody talking about these, but for me they're perfect. A little lighter than som and just the right kind of smooth. For a heavy typist, bottoming out sounds are probably not the most satisfying though...

Anytime a product becomes sufficiently popular, you will ultimately find more frequent variations available. You're kind of bitching about choice right now. There are already tons of options in exactly what you're asking for. This is just extra stuff. If the product you were wishing this was didn't exist, I'd be with you. Why make things harder for the consumer? But there are plentiful options that do exactly what you ask. Just choose one of those.

EnormousAtomIt wasn't about the particular board as I've said a few times. It's about the design choice.

Get a better 75%? I like these: https://p3dstore.com/collections/75-size-boards Also, you could get the Vortex Tab instead of the Race 3.

Debido666It wasn't about this particular board. It was about the standard keyboard makers and their non standard sizes. I don't have one of these, nor do I want one.

Keyboards are not standardized to that extent because that's literally the point of the hobby. Find a 1.5 artisan and have some fun. If it's really an issue, wasd will sell you a blank.

I just popped an artisan on the delete key actually. There's a gap but doesn't bother me.

a lack and even disregard for standardization is unfortunately not just a problem in the keyboard community :( considering keyboards are used for so many different applications and types of applications, it is good that there is experimentation with different layouts and differently sized keys in order to discover the most ideal layouts. i would place at least part of the blame for difficulty in finding good replacement sets on keycap manufacturers themselves.

Carbon Exotic kit contains 2 1.5u esc, 1 1.5u del, and a 1.5 1.
Just a thought. Not common. Not realistic. Could have easily done 1u esc, 1u del, and added an extra key. But hey, that's what they chose to do.

Why don't you just put a standard key-cap there, see what it looks like.
I really wanted this to be backlit like the engineering model most reviewers got, but the production model seems to not be LED compatible.

NINJERThe point of it wasn't this board, nor ways around it- I don't even have the board. The point was why do they do it in general, knowing that the customer experience is changed in regards to keycaps. It's not like they don't *know* that it creates a problem.

There are plenty of boards that work the way you want for keycaps. Just because this particular one doesn't isn't a reason to bash one vendor. I get what you're saying and I, too, prefer a range of choice for whatever product I buy, but it's really not their concern.

psicloneI'm not bashing one vendor. I'm talking about the tendency lately of multiple vendors to do this.

You could probably use a novelty on it if you wanted to replace it.
