For a long time I kept going back to my F1.8 85mm Canon EF. It is really good portrait lens. And smaller than most of my other lenses, so great for street photography. Then I made the mistake of getting a macro lens. The Canon F2.8 100MM L series. Which is a bit long and tele, but which can focus on anything from the tip of your nose to infinity. So that opened up a whole new world of macro street photography. Even without the macro feature, that lens is just staggering. So much detail, so much contrast and color. It's perfect. But due to it's size I am already scouting around for a more compact macro.

CalaverasgrandeI've heard so many great things about the 85mm 1.8 as a portrait lens but I'm curious how you approach street photography with that long of a focal length? Are you usually capturing scenes from a further away distance? Like across the street?

TylerIts unconventional, but on a full frame 85mm is good enough for 5-6 feet away. That is a frame filling shot of a face. It's good for across the street if you are trying to take a picture of a whole storefront. But not like zoomed in on someone. Not that tele. My 100mm is almost too tele. But again I just back up about 10 feet and I am good. I also have 35 and used to have a 50 that were good, but I found the AOV too similar to my own eyes, so it was boring to me.

CalaverasgrandeMakes sense! Never tried an 85 for street photography but I like the idea that you could crowd the frame a bit more to make an interesting image. The nice thing is the size of the 85 doesn't seem much larger on camera than a 50mm prime, for example, in terms of remaining somewhat stealthy.

Tylerthe 85mm also has this cool property (on full frame at least) that it flatters faces. Slightly elongating, and if shot wide open usually the sides of the face will roll off into the bokeh. Looks great on women, but also really nice on a weathered old guy too.
