Hands down, it would be some Audeze product. I have worked my way up in the LCD line from the 2-3-4. The LC-3 is the most bang for the buck, but I had to try the LC-4 and could never go back. Sound-staging is spectacular, the frequency band has no shortfalls (unless you need the analytic and sterile top end of a Sennheiser) The Audeze is not analytical, and some feel it is soft, I disagree. Base is amazing, how the hell do they do that. I use Woo WA-6 SE with Takatsuki TA-274B with the surprisingly great PSVANE CV-181. I have enjoyed and owned Grado, Sennheiser, and Sony. I also use Audeze in ear Icid-2 and Icdi-4. Again, the 2's are excellent, the 4's are mind-blowing.

jadem6Audeze LCDs are soft when compared to headphones like the HD 800 and the Utopia. However, I really don't like the latter two (unless I really feel like drilling holes in my eardrums). I think the perception of "softness" comes with the sense of the LCDs missing out on that last percent of detail in the treble (which I agree with). No, these aren't the most detailed cans in the lower treble region and do have a roll-off starting in the very upper mids (the 3 and 4 come back a bit at the mid/high treble); but to me this creates a lovely, warm signature that I absolutely love. Personally, I actually like the LCD-3 more than the LCD-4. I acknowledge the LCD-4 sounds like a technically superior headphone, but it doesn't give me the same feeling of liquid musicality that makes the LCD-3 more pleasing to my ears. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

dcha12Great comments dcha12, I agree that it's a perceived loss of top end. The top end is fully there, it is not highlighted or etched. Many audiophiles want that highlighted top end in their systems, but in reality, it is not there live. I do agree the LCD-3 is much more liquid, and musical. After six months with the LCD-4's they have come to that liquidity and are much more musical. It took many hundreds of hours. If I went back to the LCD3's, I suspect I would at first feel I was missing something, but would quickly forget what I was missing. The 3's are by far the best bang for the buck, and super mid range, liquidity and musical. What more could we ask for?

jadem6I'm an LCD-line fan too. I stopped at LCD-3, that's my "one" headphone. I'm not sure what the LCD-4 would do better, I've never heard it, but I don't want to hear it, honestly. I'll remain blissfully ignorant of any improvements. But I love the entire LCD line, I've heard them all except 1 and 4. Nice setup. My LCD-3 is being powered through a Liquid Carbon using balanced connector. Maybe I'll find a pic and post it here.

WaydeRI agree with you about the drop at the very high-end. I just chalk it up to it not being an analytical headphone. A bit of roll-off on top keeps its midrange presentation very smooth. Where the LCD-3 really shines is intimate female vocal ranges. I can listen to a well-recorded classic jazz with Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald and the voice just feels like it's wrapped in silk and stroking my head while whispering into my ears. There's no other way to describe it. But I also find the bass, especially lower bass to be very detailed, while not bass-forward, there's no noticible bump in mid-bass that's so common in lesser headphones these days, it presents the entire range of bass in a very analytical way, which I appreciate. Put on some Massive Attack and the LCD-3 reveals harmonies in the bass range that other headphones won't. You can hear Massive Attack actually "playing" with deep bass tones, a few at a time, intersecting and branching off really adding a dimension to their music that I guess is completely missed by most fans of their music.

WaydeRI find the 4 to have even better transient response, resolve, and resolution/detail than the 3 (sounds cleaner), while losing a little in musicality and liquidity (it's still very good in this regard though). Timbre to me means everything when it comes to sound and I love the timbre of the LCD-3 vs the LCD-4. Mid-bass bump isn't necessarily a characteristic of "lesser" headphones; it's a characteristic of dynamic drivers. Planars tend to extend very well in the bass. Audeze bass is world-leading good; if you want quality bass this is it. If you want more bass just use a LCD and some EQ.

dcha12Like you fine folks, I'm a huge fan of the LCD line (well, Audeze in general). first time I heard the LCD-3 I knew we were meant to be together (a true love story). I think I have just about every one except the 4s now and love them all. really digging the LCD2 closed and classics too.

WaydeREverything you said on this is spot on how I feel about them too... Jazz or some nice smooth R&B... man, those things have a smooth, luscious, warm sound that's just love.

bigshelInteresting. Do you find that you use one more than the other? I ended up selling a lot of the gear I have since a lot of stuff was sitting around collecting dust. As sad as that was, I'd rather have some other person own it and use it versus just sit there (goodbye old LCD2.1).
