Good question. Without a doubt the 1980's Sennheiser HD 540 Reference 1 - 600 ohm version. Yet to hear any headphone that comes close to its realism :)

lexsI had a pair of Sennheiser HD 540 Reference Gold back in the day. They went missing in transit when I moved back to New Zealand :( They had an impressive wide soundstage with some recordings, and lacked the brittle and piercing high-end that plagued the standard original version of the HD 540. I had to replace them with HD 598 due to being on disability pension. I enjoyed the tone of the HD 598 but missed the microdetail. The HD 598 were tonally richer and more pleasing, more lively, had more sparkle, but lacked microdetail in comparison. The HD 540 were more neutral overall, but the HD 598 had excellent vocals. After losing all my gear in a house fire I now have my eye on the HD 6XX as an affordable option on the headphone I always wanted, the HD 650. One question I would ask the forum here: does anyone remember the other reference headphone that Sennheiser made at the same time as the HD 540 that were closed back, had a woofer and tweeter arrangement in each ear, and a frequency response from 5 hz to 30 khz? I can't remember the model number, but they sounded very impressive, despite exaggerating the soundstage and reverb such that listening to a CD of, say, The Eagles, gave the impression of sitting at the back of a concert hall with a real band performing in the distance up front. In the end, I rejected them because they were not as comfortable, but most of all, the deep bass was so concussive with rock music that my ear drums literally ached after 20 mins at moderate levels. It would be interesting to find out what model number that was and to see if there's any information online about it.
