The Bluetooth APTX-HD codec is supposed to deliver "better than CD" quality. But for me the jury is still out on that. So, I will give a selection for wired and wireless headphones. And I will also stay within realistic budget: under $500. Wired: Sennheiser HD660S or the Sennheiser HD58X Massdrop. (The HD 58X was delivered this morning. So I will need a couple weeks for burn-in and some serious testing). Wireless: A Bluetooth APTX-HD compatible headset. I have not yet been able to test any, so I will keep an eye out here for recommendations.

RedDogCoAll bluetooth codecs are lossy encoding, AptX HD has a higher data transfer rate than SBC, AptX or AAC and lower than LDAC. LDAC is where I noticed the biggest difference. If you want to try out AptX HD you can pickup a Radsone ES100 and plug any wired set into it. That device works with just about all advanced bluetooth codecs, included LDAC.

ElectronicVicesThanks for the info. I did some more research in the meantime and found this great site listing which headphones support which codec. I have a Nokia 8 phone and a subscription to Tidal, so that is my setup for highres music on the go. https://www.bluetoothcheck.com/d/nokia-8/accessories. Based on what I see here I will go for the Sony WH-H900N (AMZN €250) or WH-1000XM3 (AMZN €310) , these both support APTX-HD and LDAC. Thanks again for the info. Update: I just picked up a WH-H900N in a local store at the incredible price of €170,- during the winter sales.

RedDogCoI've got a gen 1 Sony 1000X, it lacked AptX HD but included LDAC. It changed my opinion on bluetooth/NC headphones and mine travels with me daily. I have some family that picked up the 900N but I've not personally listened to it.

ElectronicVicesThe Sony WH-1000XM3 (latest generation of the 1000X series) supports APTX-HD in addition to LDAC. On this page you can see the gear that supports APTX in all it's different flavors: https://www.aptx.com/products?field_product_category_tid=125 Use the filters to select brand, product type and APTX type. Happy hunting.

RedDogCoI use an ES100 with Noble K10u's and it sounds really close to wired out of my LG v20 (LDAC codec). Before the FW update the ES100 only supported up to AptX-HD (one of the reasons I bought it initially). The 1000X sounds it's best on LDAC but I only have AptX to compare that one too (HD was an update with Gen 2). If you use an Android phone with 8.0 or later or Sony TV/BluRay/UHD player you should have LDAC BT available for those Sonys you picked up.
