Mechanical Keyboard Sound Isn't That Simple
Figure 1: I couldn't think of a more literal way to represent this article if I tried... Looking back just a few years ago, there’s no doubt that the huge influx of people that joined the hobby at the peak of the COVID pandemic were drawn to keyboards by way of YouTube, TikTok, and other audio-visual content platforms. Even as the output from these content creators has waned in recent months, their collective impact and legacy on the keyboard hobby is rather firmly etched in the history books. As a result of all of their sound tests, build logs, and opinion videos, the message is clear to any new person joining the hobby: mechanical keyboards are all about the sound. Thock this, clack that. Whether it’s keyboards, keycaps, or even singular switches, seemingly everyone new to the hobby meticulously pores over each component of their keyboard not in an attempt to figure out how it will feel in hand, but how it will sound as they’re furiously grinding their way out from...

But if Massdrop had their european office in let's say Luxembourg (or any other EU country with low VAT) they would only need to charge 17% VAT. Especially the buyers from countries with high VAT would save a bit.
It's also about the hassle with the tax office. If I buy from the US, I dont get the package delivered to my house, instead I just get a letter from my nearest tax office. First, they have horrible opening times from 6:00 to15:30 and once a week from 6:00 to 18:00. It's like 20km away, than you have to sit there for like half to an hour, open the package in front of the tax officer, get weird looks because you bought keycaps for 200€, explain why you have bougth those weird expansive plastic keycaps, argue if they are tollfree or not (afaik keyboards, and keyboardparts are tollfree in Germany but dont count me on that), pay the VAT and drive home another 20km.
There's probably a better way. Got a Model M cable lately via Ebay from an US guy. Ebay handled all the tax/toll/shipping issues for like 20€ (well as expansive as the cable itself). The guy just send the cable to the nearest Ebay warehouse/office. I got the cable within 2 weeks directly delivered to my house with no additional hassle.
If Massdrop would go this way I would probably spend waaaaay to much money here, so better leave it the way it is.
Asides from that, I feel your pain. I respect their jobs because they do catch some stuff that we don't want coming in to the country. Recently I got something delivered outside of Berlin and they opened it, inspected it and made the tax decision themselves and I had to pay at the post office , other times I send to Berlin and have to go and sit in the Zollamt. It's always a really intense experience to have someone make you tear apart a package in 30 seconds, and you've been waiting for months to get it! Then you argue that it's not a keyboard, because it's parts that make up a keyboard, then they say that it is a keyboard since it will become a keyboard, it is a keyboard XD
MD ships with full customs declarations and so DHL delivers to your doorstep and there you can pay the VAT. You are right: computer and computer parts are toll free in Germany and should in the whole EU. In Germany we are lucky, other EU-Countries have a customs handling fee.
Was ist daran heftig ?
In Germany it is 19% Einfuhrumsatzsteuer the same amount like Mehrwertsteuer (aka VAT) like you pay for every product in Germany in every store (as private person). Custom/Toll for computers and computer parts is 0% (like in your screenshot). No handling fee. On strange products like coffee, alc., oil, ... there are additional taxes.
